Half a league, half a league,
Half a league onward,
All in the valley of Death
Rode the six hundred.
"Forward, the Light Brigade!
"Charge for the guns!" he said:
Into the valley of Death
Rode the six hundred.

this is most certianly not from the Medieval period. This is Much later in history than that.

I'm no expert, but this looks like it should be from the English Civil war period, which was from 1642-1652.
The medieval period only last till the 15th century

No, they're Spanish, from the Army of Flanders 1648.

Just as a hint next time- the flags are good indicators of nationality. That red cross on white background? That's the Burgundy Cross, the symbol of the Spanish Tercio and of the Spanish Empire in general (but not Spain).

Pikes, rapiers, early firearms, Spain. This is a Tercio. Here watch this: www.youtube.com/watch?v=dMEnBHef96c

(Yes that is viggo mortensen AKA Aragorn)

From film Alatriste, which is an adaptation from a book by Arturo Perez Reverte (HIGHLY RECOMMENDED)

all you need to tell is, look at the style of armour, and the amount of pikes. pikes are renaissance and early gunpowder era.

Hi, I'm from Spain and I will clarify this matter.
This is the Battle of Roccroi. 19 / may / 1643
In that battle fought France against Spain
France 50,000 Soldiers Spain 18,000
The Spanish defeat in that battle is considered as the beginning of declibe the power of the Spanish Empire. Leading to new European powers, England and France.

Rocroi, el último tercio (translated from Spanish: Rocroi, the Last Tercio)
by Augusto Ferrer-Dalmau (2011)

A 'Tercio' was a tight and complex infantry formation comprising of pikemen, swordsmen and arquebusiers (musketeers more or less) used by various armies across 17th century Europe, but mostly in Spain.

The setting is the battle of Rocroi (1643) was fought during the Thirty Years War, probably one of the most dramatic and apocalyptic war of Reformation Europe (more 'Early Modern' than 'Medieval', the cogs of the modern world were starting to turn). The battle itself was fought between the French and Spanish with the latter losing decisively. The significance of the battle is placed on the diminishing effectiveness of said Tercio when faced against barrages of artillery pieces, hence the 'Last Tercio'

and yes, the date is correct, 2011. Kind of sweet seeing realism being used to capture historical moments, those were always my favourite pieces in galleries (pic very relevant)

Given the context of this painting, it feels like the depiction of this tercio doesn't make sense. From the painting, one would likely deduce that the tercio is a victorious force dealing with the aftermath of a battle, when it was the spanish who lost the battle. On a side note, this is a great example of actually art that is modern, much better than the retarded kindergarten level doodlings that pass for 'modern art'. Pic related, a $40 million masterpiece by Jackson Pollock. It really says something about the quality of your art that when you look it up on google images, not only do all his 'paintings' look the same, there are just as many pictures of the actual artist as his works. /rant over/
#83 to #61 - lankyman (09/17/2015) [-]
(shamelessly stolen from wiki) the last tercio, the one depicted, repulsed 4 cavalry charges and was the last Spanish tercio present on the battlefield when everyone else fled or surrendered. So again, pretty ballsy bunch of people to depict.

I enjoyed your rant, I'm not 100% sure what the painting is going for or even the context of the battle itself, but I guess "standing triumphant and defiant amongst your fallen comrades" sounds better than "cowering with brownies in their huggies". Given that the artist is Spanish, I guess he wanted to show a bit of national heroism.

Also, I enjoyed your rant, although I defend the "artistic expression" of artists; skill and merit should factor in.

I hate Jackson Pollacks. I never liked his work or work similar to his. It looks like the floor of something someone painting a nice portrait would leave behind. Pic related, it's Isaac Israëls Het transport der kolonialen, my favorite painting of all time. That's my type of art, that's something i can get behind and say, it's art.

battle of Gondor looks sick tho
#79 to #35 - anon (09/16/2015) [-]
Isn't this when Carthage invaded northern Italy after Rome had taken Sicily and the other island? The elephants and like 35,000 men came from the alps to surprise attack Rome? or am I missing something in terms of the name Gondor?
#84 to #79 - anon (09/19/2015) [-]
The picture shows the battle of Zama though. That was after Hannibal (so Carthage) had retreated from Italy and back to Africa. They never had that many elephants in Taly after crossing the Alps.
Might look like they've got the upper hand in this, but the Romans actually won the battle, delaing the most crushing defeat to Carthage and basically sealing their doom

Forth, and fear no darkness! Arise! Arise, Riders of Theoden! Spears shall be shaken, shields shall be splintered! A sword day... a red day... ere the sun rises!

I don't know. The way the world is right now, everyone's economies hanging on to the edge because they're so tightly bound that a sneeze causes financial tsunamis, refugee crises overloading systems, rapidly dwindling resources and water supplies...we may yet have such an opportunity in our lifetimes.
