Probably never since NATO has nothing to offer to finland that could benefit finland.

Sweden and Finland has a deal that if they were to join NATO they have to do it together. If I remember correctly Russia is Finland's biggest trading (or one of) partner and if Finland joins NATO Russia will sanction them. Sooo Sweden and Finland will not join NATO until they feel an immediate threat or Finland find trade elsewhere.

Quite a few U.S.S.R. air vehicles.
They have a large army, and a lot of money in it. But with how Russia is going right now. I don't see them as large of a threat to the world as many people say it is. The only thing I'd be worried about is nukes.
#312 to #11 - caseris (09/26/2015) [-]
Not to get you riled up or ruin your joke, but there's a good reason Finland won the war against the soviets.

You see, Stalin wasn't too nice of a guy, and before that war decided to purge most high ranking officers to evade treason or an uprising (those with any skill or brain were thus eliminated) meaning the armies Finland fought were so disorganized, without supplies or proper command (such as no winter clothing), that it was no surprise Finland won.

Of course, Staling quickly realised this and learned from his mistake.

Right now, with wars fought by drones and airstrikes, i doubt Finland will stand any chance against Russia alone, but then again, i doubt the world is just going to stay and watch as Finland is being invaded.

#322 to #312 - sylaz (09/26/2015) [-]
Are you kidding me?

The Russian ground forces is in just as much dissray as it was during the purges.
Due to widespread corruption and hazing. Infact it's so bad that conscripts are being sold into sexual slavery while the senior staff is looking the other way, or in some cases orders it. Then you have a air force, which on paper looks good. But in reality, is rusting away, as they lack spare parts and simple maintaince.

Lastly you have alot of equipment, which is over 25 years old.
While it is still capable weaponry, it is widely outdated compared to the western standards.
#336 to #322 - caseris (09/26/2015) [-]
Just so you know, i'm not Russian, which you seem to be implying, i'm Dutch.

to answer your retort, yes, i know the Russian military is far from as great as they look, but even putting all those factors in, Finland on it's own will succumb thanks to the amount of Russian manpower, this does not imply i'm predicting it as an easy war.

Finland was HIGHLY pro-Nazism and Pro-Germany prior to World War 1. Hadn't they been part of "Russian sphere of influence" during the treaty between Russia and Germany, they would have allied with Germany most certainly.

Stalin realized this was a threat to St. Petersburg which is ******* close to the Finnish border, so he decided to take the part of Finland close to St. Petersburg. It wasn't in order to take over Finland, at the time Finland didn't have a lot of valuable **** for Russia, though if they allied with Germany the Germans would suddenly have a huge landmass bordering Russia in the north, with their territories in Eastern Europe as well they could launch a blitzkrieg literally across all of the European-Russian border, which would have left Soviet destroyed, France-style.

Finland, having recently seceded from Russia (1917 I think, this is straight from my head and is most likely 100% wrong, but around that year) wasn't too keen on giving Russia back Finnish territories, as the Finns at the time had just gone through 500 years or so under Finland, and another 100 years or so under Russia.

Russia naturally knew what this would mean to their side. Finland was likely to ally with Germany, and Germany would get access to the Finnish-Russian border. Stalin realized that Finland or England was going to capture or impose some "Defended Neutrality" on Norway very soon, (which was the correct assessment as both Hitler and Churchill had definite plans on taking over Norway) and sent troops into Finland, attempting to copy the German blitzkrieg. Stalin failed, naturally, as the Soviet generals could only dream of having the experience, expertise and knowledge the Germans had (side effect of Stalin killing anyone with the mind of a tactician) and a bloody war ensued where the Finnish were winning on one front (the one front the Russians wanted to take) yet losing on all other. However with an influx of support from "Volunteers" from Scandinavia lead to new expertise and experience on the Finnish side, who then decided to use ski in their war against the Russians. The result was devastating and the Finns were pushing on all fronts. Yet they knew it was futile and decided to surrender conditionally and give Russia the territory they were after.

So no, Russia's goal wasn't all of Finland, it was to scare Finland into submission, which they succeeded in, and to keep them away from Germany, which they also succeeded with. (The Finns were certain the Germans would assist them in their war against the Soviet Union. Even if not officially, the Germans didn't, which quickly killed any pro-nazism Finland had.) So the Russians won a pyrrhic victory.

At the same time, the Finns won the war yet lost the battle. Russia was the laughing stock of the world, having failed so miserably in the winter war, despite securing victory. What was expected to last for 5 days ended up lasting 3 months.

Just a history bachelor sharing some insight on the whole thing.

#332 to #277 - anon (09/26/2015) [-]
Okay nice bit of info there. "But" that part of the Russians just trying to scare the Finns into submission and pushing the border, I don't buy it.
After all the historians and veterans I've talked to, it was Stalins goal to retake all of Finland to the Russian mainland, just like it was before the tsars fell.
Finland was a neutral country, a very smal army, they had nothing of interest of expanding their territory. All they asked for was peace and independence.

Hitler in the begging had nothing of interest in Finland either, it wasn't until after the winter war Hitler saw potential of having Finland as an allied in there assult on the Soviets.
If the Germans wanted Finland in their upcoming assault on the Soviets before the winter war, they would have aided the Finns already then.
User avatar #424 to #332 - jettom (09/26/2015) [-]
Germany didn't add Finland to their arsenal due to the treaty they made with the Soviet Union where they "divided" Europe between themself. Russia was quite insistent on Finland being part of the Soviet sphere of influence. And because even if 60% of Finland was pro-nazism, they weren't pro "Let's succumb to Germany".

Look, War isn't video games. There's very, very few leaders in the past century that has had the "I must take over X in order to increase my borders!" mentality. Finland had literally nothing of value except a huge border towards Northern Russia.

Just gonna quote this from Wikipedia. Yeah, the Soviets ****** up pretty hard, but they still won in the end. It just cost them much more than anticipated.
User avatar #105 to #92 - dalarna (09/25/2015) [-]
Are you saying the Soviets won, when Finland manage to fight of the aggressive invader, outnumbered 10 to 1 and keeping their independence as a democracy and a free nation?
Maybe on the "Paper" the soviets won...

But even if the Finns did lose soil, money and lives, they manage to go out as "Victors" by keeping independence and freedom against those odds. And against such an enemy, the victory is even greater.

The numbers doesnt matter. The only thing that matters is what the terms of the peace were. And the terms of the peace was that the Soviets won and gained territory. Sure, they lost a ******* of troops - but so what? Soviet could replace the men they lost, and Finland needed every single one. That's what Soviet did against Germany. The Germans were killing heaps of them, but they kept on coming - and the Germans couldn't replace the men they lost and thus the Red Army swarmed into Germany like ants to sugar.

My father knew the man, was in the military with him and went to medical school with him. He never wanted to be the president, it was his brother in line next but his brother died so he was kinda forced to be president because of the whole regime thing. He's mainly a puppet to the advisors, a lot more complicated than that but I'm trying to be as simiple as possible. He sent his military to protect a group of Christians from a terrorist attack, but of course the American media doesn't want you to know that. Under the Assad regime there was peace with Christians and Muslims in Syria. ISIS is ******* things up with it.

That's my impression too. The Assad regime made it so there was peace and secularism in Syria. However, it was still a dictatorship - and thats why the Arab-spring wave hit the country, and when that wave was built up under by western pro-democracy policies its no reason the war is dragging out. Unfortunately, the civil war also brought forward the rise of ISIS.
