My Japanese professor has said on multiple occasions that it's basically socially unacceptable to flat out say no to someone, hence the term
ちょっと or 'chotto'
An example would be someone asking you "Do you want to go on a date?"
Then you respond using ちょっと, which in this scenario would directly translate to something a long the lines of "That's not very convenient for me"

Reminds me of some Mexican kid at my high school that wished he wasn't Mexican. He talked in this ****** forced English accent, and used over complicated large words he used the wrong definition/usage of the word when it wasn't needed and just complicated **** because he hated his culture said that England was more sophisticated and **** . He also talked **** about Americans and how they're lazy and whatever. Little **** played the "I had it worse" game constantly and acted like a future columbine.
