I have a British guy living in my building. I run into him every now and then and every time he says: "Hello, how are you?"

I'm not just a little embarrassed about how long it took me to learn to simply reply "Fine, how are you?"

******* british people being way too polite for a filthy plebeian like me to understand.

Just say, "Alright?" and he'll reply with "Yeah thanks, or just smile and you'll both soon move on. He'll accept you as one of his own.

>Tea bag falls off spoon on the way to place it in the bin
>Apologise to nurses for use of a bed in a free healthcare system
>Invite people to come round for dinner even though you really don't want them there
>Close all doors to rooms in the house when people are around so they don't inquire about your possessions
>Every year say 'we really must get the grandfather clock repaired, I miss its sound' but never do it
>Frown when someone asks for 'skimmed' milk in their tea, or the more recent 'skinny tea'
>Judge people's class on whether they own a teapot
>Reserve 'the weather' conversation for silent awkward gaps in group conversations

And my personal biggest gripe as an englishman:

Go round someones house with others. They present you with a whole cake, freshly made. Ask if you would like some. They presume you will decline to be polite, because deep down they want to keep the cake to themselves. Actually say 'yes I will have some'.
Watch as the mortal soul drains out of their eyes as they feel forced as a jew in a concentration camp to cut you a slice.
You asked me if I wanted cake. I said yes.

I hate pointless questions you ask to be polite, and don't really want an answer to. If you don't want to know, don't ask.

If someone asks how you're doing, how your day/weekend was, etc. there's only one acceptable answer. "Fine." It doesn't matter if you're being attacked by ninjas riding artillery bears wielding flaming chainsaws, you're fine.
