venilly (19 hours ago) [-] context for anyone that needs it this is a British show called '8 out of 10 cats does countdown'. which came about when the channel it is broadcast on did various 'mash ups' of popular shows this particular combination of the comedy panel show '8 out of 10 cats' its called that because it used to be sponsored by whiskers whos tagline was '8 out of 10 cats prefer whiskers' (a comedy panel show) and the word and number based game show countdown. Rachel Riley (the blonde lady) did maths at oxford and is a regular host on countdown that works out the maths problems on the show (it is rather impressive) and the other two are famous British comedians and from the show 8 out of 10 cats

Well, the man was saying its "magic", where in actual fact the girl is totally brilliant. It is insulting her intelligence to imply its magic (or cheating), when she is a genius. The other man was kind enough to point it out how talented she was by saying she does this on a regular basis, and that a mathematical challenge that is beyond his ability is as simple to her as someone dropping off milk.
If that is not a compliment to her, I dont know what is.

She did a complicated bit of maths.
Comedian no. 1 (Jimmy Carr) said it might as well be magic, i.e. it's complex enough that he's saying that everyone other than her will probably never be able to grasp what she did. In essence he's saying that it's so far beyond his understanding that it might as well be magic.
Comedian no. 2 (Sean Lock) said it wasn't worth that much praise as she was "only doing her job" comparing it to how we don't applaud the milkman when he does his job.
Her burn was that she flipped his statement back on him by pointing out that his job as a comedian is to make jokes, something he gets applauded for.
Basically: Comedian no. 2 said you shouldn't get praised for doing your job and she pointed out that that is exactly what he does.

Which in itself doesn't make sense because without the feedback loop an audience provides you, there is no "comedy" and especially no "stand-up comedian" with out the audience, but they laugh rather than clap, clapping is generally reserved for when a particular joke or statement is a stand-alone amung the rest, if it really hits home with the audience, something like "we were all thinking it, thank god some one's saying it!"
I think the "burn" is more from the fact she meekly claps and looks back to the audience, implying his comedy is sub-par, we really need the audio to understand the situation. I do realise I seem retarded going in so much depth about this...
