I'll be honest, I want an African director for this.
Not African-American. African. Preferably Nigerian.
Someone who spent their first 20 years growing up in Africa before they moved to the States or wherever they **** they landed their director job.

I don't give a flying **** if he's white and born in Nigeria, black, Asian or even a ******* jew. I want him to grow up experiencing growing up in Africa.

While I agree with the general sentiment here the character of Black Panther was created by 2 New York born Jews who probably learned everything they knew about Africa from a couple books or cultural preconceptions. Wakanda isn't a real place any more than Asgard, they just draw from different historical/mythological frameworks.

Nobody was calling for a Scandanavian director for Thor, so I don't see the big deal here.

Granted, I do like unique perspectives from a direction standpoint and the lack of creative voices from Africa in American cinema is a real shame, but if the spirit of the culture is captured well enough by 2 dudes in the 60's without access to the internet that people want it to be made by genuine citizens of the area then I'd hope that people now could do it the same justice.

I'm not saying it because of affirmative action, I'm saying it because I genuinely believe an African-born Director can portray life in Africa better than an American-born one. At the very least have one of the writers from Africa.

If you look at The Avengers, Iron Man, Thor and Captain America, it's a lot of talking. A lot of complications making them unable to act, tracking down and solving the complications then conclusion. It's standard Hollywood, I'm not stating it's bad, it's overused for a reason, but that isn't what The Black Panther is. It's not about protecting the people, dishing out justice or whatever the **** , it's about protecting a country. He's not a Superhero, he's a ******* Superking of a closed off country, as well as head of a Tribe. He's not killing bandits because they harm innocents, he kills them because they harm his people and his nation. He doesn't act outside, above or below the law, he is the law. It's something I believe we in the West don't completely grasp. We've grown up in democracies for the most part, following basic Platonist ideals and morals. Africa and especially Wakanda is not like this, at all.

Besides, it's Africa. The borders are closed for a reason. The biggest threat of Wakanda isn't that some huge bank does some corruption and crashes the economy, unlike America. There's a lot of **** there we don't even perceive as threats due to our own societies.

I want Disney to focus on these aspects. I don't want them to be "woo explosions IN AFRICA" "political intrigue!" "EMBARGOS". I least of all don't want them to use this movie only to show off how amazing America is with S.H.I.E.L.D being the bitches, or Captain America. Wakanda is a closet society because it can sustain itself on it's trade. Especially their Vibranium.

I'm not using the comics as a basis for what the movie will be like, because I know Disney will change whatever they desire if they believe they'll get more sales.

I just think they have an insane opportunity here, and they'd be retarded not to grasp it.

They can make him Marvel's Batman and earn my eternal scorn, or they can emphasize what makes The Black Panther so ******* amazing.

But seriously, I'm not stating this because I want more africans into movie making, or because I think we should have racial quotas. I agree with you on "best guy for the job", and I believe the best guy for this job is one who can portray Africa, African corruption, African life and African mindsets the best, not an American who believes all nations are like America, and all the people of this world follows the philosophy of Platon.

You do understand that the movie is set in Wakanda.
Which has NONE of the typical african problems.
No corruption, no poverty, better health system than any country in the world, more technologically advanced than Korea and Japan. Not to mention that its so rich that AFTER destruction of their vibranium reserve they simply bought out USA debt in Marvel Universe.
We are talking about a country that is a complete antithesis of what Africa is.
You want someone who would understand an extremely technological, uber rich society that keeps itself insular from the rest of the world, get a Japanese director who studied africa. Because Wakanda and modern Africa have nothing in common except some superficial design and heritage.

What's "best"? If you could just pick out "best," nothing would ever flop. "Hey, why don't we just pick the best script from the best writer, then have it directed by the best director, using the best actors, scored by the best composer, edited by the best editor, and let's advertise it with the best marketing agency!"

Movie making is a creative artistic process. There are inputs along the way that make it what it is. The screenwriters do not **** out perfect plays which the actors just robotically portray. The director's job is more than just trying to create the scene exactly as written, it's his job to alter it however he needs to to make it come to life.
So there's creative input. But here's the thing: a person creates out of what they know. You are a product of your environment. What you feel would make sense in a scene is a product of what you learned worked for you and the people around you. But there are other experiences of the world, so stories are not limited to being told from just that one angle. Watching a story told from a point of view that gets you to think is a neat thing.

While the Black Panther has a history of how he has been depicted, this one hasn't been written yet. He needs to be close to the comics to be "the Black Panther," but that doesn't mean there's no wiggle room. Heath Ledger's Joker wasn't the same as Mark Hamil's, but they're still both work.

This "pick the best" storyline you created with its with it's "waaah affirmative action," subplot probably isn't going to be picked up by any major studios.

This is a place where the drought that hurt California earlier this year is a once-a-year phenomenon. This is a place where one of the most dangerous things in the world is a poisonous animal, not loansharks. Humanity started here, but quickly left - for a reason.

And even if it is an idealized tribal utopia, the tribe itself is still based on African tribes, and the people living in Wakanda aren't like you and me.

I can understand it from the point of view that the director would have a better understanding of the character (and audience) involved in the project if he was black too, since white guys would never really understand any of that and tend to get themselves into trouble when they try.

But if they went out of their way to find a black guy just because of PR issues then the movie will undoubtedly suffer for it.

But maybe they don't care about the quality of the movie that much, and are just pushing out more crap like when they made the superman movies and green lanter (I prefer the black green lantern from justice league actually. he rocked), because of contractual obligations and other such crap.
