but the cat would have died by then, wouldn't it have? i mean about 17 years passed until he died, and that cat could have been any age.

What if the part of the soul gave the cat a longer life?
Would that be possible?

Would have been a good idea. Not Mcgonnagall necessarily, but they could have had an unregistered animagus hide out as the Potters' pet as an extra bodyguard or something

... I've seen this argument before, and no one ever points out the obvious.
It's a cat. It probably wasn't home.

It was probably conveniently out hunting or something.
Odds are if you asked JKR, she'd give you that answer.

Wasn't it said somewhere that there couldn't be any more horcruxes? I thought the limit was seven.

The limit was how far he could push his soul. Hell, people assumed one was the limit until MoldyVoldy showed up.

But Dumbledor clearly stated Harry was the only thing alive in the house.

So either the cat is dead,or not home.

But, as far as I know, the soul only splits into two pieces. That means, if one piece stays in Voldemord and the other one goes into Harry, there isn't any soul left wich can go into the cat.

Because the horcruxes that were inanimate were made on purpose. He deliberately detached a part of his soul and placed it within the object. The one that detached and went into Harry was a mistake, something he hadn't intended. So it's possible that the loose soul fragment could only exist by attaching itself to another soul, Harry's.
