is that "constantly apologizing being a sign of emotional abuse" thing ******** or truth? i apologize way too much and i've always wondered why

or maybe it's just a habit...

Not in Canada. We all do that so I don't believe it honestly. All my friends and I say sorry a lot.

My one friend got ****** over big time by his bitchy ex-gf that he was in total love with. He's chanced ever since she broke up with her and now does that sorry **** all the time.

Never thought about it until now, but it makes sense if it's true. Aside from myself I have one other friend who apologizes a lot. Our moms have always been horrible to us. So maybe?
User avatar #51 to #1 - Deavas (01/03/2016) [-]
It might be. My ex always apologized and I was aware of previous bf abuse to her so there may very well be some truth to it

You were sodomized as a child. Most likely by an uncle or perhaps an older cousin during a family gathering.

Partly true. People who are subject to emotional abuse eventually tend to believe that people being upset is always their fault, or that anything they do might potentially set off someone else, so they constantly apologize and try to prevent others from getting angry. Now, that doesn't mean that everyone who apologizes a lot is being abused at home, but if you see that a bunch of other warning signs alongside each other, maybe time to nicely ask someone about their home life.

Of course, since you're asking about yourself, the answer is probably no. If it's a reflexive thing that you do out of politeness, then it's fine. If you do it because you're afraid that other people might lash out at you, that's a good sign that your parents and significant other is probably emotionally abusing you.
#60 to #1 - hongkonglongdong (01/03/2016) [-]
It is a sign of emotional abuse, but only in the same way a black eye is a sign of physical abuse. You could have just walked into a lamp post, so to speak.
#9 to #1 - anon (01/03/2016) [-]
It can be. Part of being abused is internalizing the abuse, thinking that what they say and do is somehow your fault. And in turn, you start to apologize for simple things that don't really need apologizing for. I tend to apologize all the time; when someone picks something up that I dropped, when I bump someone, when I walk in someone's way. Things that aren't a big deal feel like a big deal to me because if it had been my abuser I'd done them to, he'd have gotten belligerent. But there are some people who are just hard on themselves naturally. Doesn't have to be from abuse.

Re: the dyed hair.

My girlfriend is Middle Eastern. Her parents are straight from Lebanon. Her dad saw a girl with dyed hair and had this to say to me later:

"She... she wild. She like devil. Evil."

I'm sorry, Mr. iliekcereal. This wasn't meant to be a response to your post.
User avatar #40 to #1 - Hreidmar (01/03/2016) [-]
Anon no. 9 pretty much said it as it is. It is a POSSIBLE symptom of emotional abuse, and the more extreme the apologizing is (I have a friend who will apologize if a sudden noise comes from across the room. Poor girl) the more likely it is to be a symptom. However, this isn't a guarantee. There are plenty of people for whom 'sorry' is just automatic, either because they just tend to take responsibility because it's easier to fix things that way or just because their environment was full of people saying Sorry, like a family with a lot of strict rules and traditions, or Canada.
User avatar #50 to #1 - infinitereaper (01/03/2016) [-]

Maybe you're like me a bit then. I feel bad about things other people feel upset or sad about and I want someone to apologise but there's only me there. Or just big feelings of guilt. Or abuse. Any of the three or any combination could be the reason I'd believe, as well as plain how you've been raised.
User avatar #84 to #1 - chuckbillrow (01/04/2016) [-]
im sure there are cases like that but i constantly apologize and that is because i used to work in fast food where they train you to constantly apologize

At the very least, it's a sign of insecurity or emotional troubles. I mean, if a person consistently feels like they're inconveniencing you just by reason of existing, something in their emotional makeup is unhealthy.

Obiwan OBJECTIVELY was an out of practice old dude, and Yoda was borderline senile and was an old dude LOOONG before the original trilogy
User avatar #77 to #75 - icytime (01/04/2016) [-]
Just absolutely not, Obiwan wouldn't have been as good physically but he was still VERY powerful and had a key role with both of the most powerful force-users ever, and then why would Yoda be senile? He trained Luke quite well it seems before he became a force ghost like Obiwan (which is also a huge feat).
User avatar #78 to #77 - renespar (01/04/2016) [-]
so... they both spent about 20 years learning how to make themselves technically immortal but functionally dead, and Obi-wan in episode 4 otherwise did a few minor things that padawans learned early on, and as for Yoda, seriously, go watch episode 5 again, he was pretty disheveled and clearly not entirely in a sane state, though that's partially due to how ******* just enveloped Dagobah was in the dark side... which of course made a GREAT training ground for a young, impressionable man trying to become a jedi
User avatar #79 to #78 - icytime (01/04/2016) [-]
Yeah he did minor things, but it doesn't mean that he couldn't have done infinitely more.

Yoda was just old really, he was done. He was ridiculously powerful in his own right too, just old and it was his time in his mind.

And yes, the young impressionable man who was arguably the best light side force user ever, and undoubtedly in the EU.
User avatar #80 to #79 - renespar (01/04/2016) [-]
"but it doesn't mean that he couldn't have done infinitely more." show, don't tell
"Yoda was just old really, he was done." so you're AGREEING with e he was old and senile?

and yes, I know what luke did, trust me, I know post-episode 6 EU more than most, I know about the time he managed to come BACK from being a force-ghost, I know about the fact he had a grandson who could explode people by channeling force into spots only HE could see, etc, etc I'm saying that the training ground Yoda chose was a ****** choice, and a testament to his deteriorating mind, even 20 years before the original trilogy started, considering he wanted luke to go full on complete light side, and then luke ended up slightly closer to being a gray jedi
User avatar #83 to #80 - icytime (01/04/2016) [-]
www.youtube.com/watch?v=8kpHK4YIwY4 , his death scene. He could've fought Vader for a ton of time, mostly due to his form, but also because eh was still quite powerful, but on top of that, it doesn't even speak to his ability to train Jedi. He was just biding time for his group to get away.

No? Just said he was old. All you're saying is really a theory that he is senile, haven't seen anything before that backs that up, but what I do know is they were both old and became force ghosts, nothing about them not being very powerful and being senile.

The only reason you should dye your hair is because you like it that way. Not because it gets other people to notice you. You should feel special enough on your own terms, not on account of other people's thoughts.

>Constant apologizing is a side-effect of emotional abuse
... It's really not though, I swear ******* tumblr pseudo-psychiatrists. It's often almost the opposite case (at least according to Watzlawick) emotional abuse and stress closes of most people, doesn't make them more polite or apologetic. Apologizing is much more closely linked to cultural factors than to personality etc. which is why often people feel the Japanese are overly polite etc.

You think other countries talk about America's slavery as much as we do? Black slavery is the most common topic of slavery because it happened in THIS country
#72 to #57 - anon (01/03/2016) [-]
slavery happened pretty much everywhere
the point is that people that talk about slavery in the US are misinformed. They believe that slavery was invented by white man and basically that anywhere before "white man" came was a utopia of sorts where everyone lived in peace and unity amongst the people and the animals but then "white man came along and just rounded them up and invented slavery.
actual history needs to be taught and the blaming needs to stop
