It's not like it shuts off automatically after it's done so you can go to sleep anyway or anything.

It shuts down itself afterwards, you could sleep while the updates are installed.

Just buy a mac lol. Despite all the hate we get, mac users have lives, unlike most PC users. They're also surprisingly good to use.

I'm a pretty big freetard myself, but nobody is going to switch from what they're used to.

Also, turning off updates is security suicide.

I just close my laptop and it goes into sleep or hibernate mode. It doesn't use any battery (or so little I can't tell) and then boots up in like 2-3 seconds with windows 8.

My windows is Norwegian, so bear with me here.

Go to control panel
Administrative tools
Services
Go all the way down to "Windows update"
Right click, select "Stop"
Go to its properties by right clicking
Where it says "start-up type" or something like that, select "Deactivate"
???
PROFIT!

Why would you shut down your PC? I can understand a laptop since it gets so hot, but their is no reason to shut it down other than updates. I leave mine on 24/7

If you wish to enjoy the electrical components shutting down due to them getting fried by constant use, go right ahead.
