Valve told Chesko theyre not going to remove the mod he created Removing it because Fores got a bit upset that his animation resources were being used for profit unless they feel compelled to do so legally. There it is guys, this is what it's going to come down to now.

Technically, no.

In practice? Yes. Mod makers will have a dilemma on their hands: charge money for their mods and get tiny scraps of money if at all, or don't charge money for a mod that someone else will take, barely alter, sell for $0.99, then report your mod for stealing from "theirs", since copyright/etc has never really applied to work that is given away for free.

Even worse, since game developers get paid some fraction of your purchase of the mod, it will encourage the game devs to put even less work into a game and sell an even more incomplete product, since they'll get paid for other people doing the work they should have done in the first place.

Its not that I think that the modders shouldn't get paid for the hard work they put into their mods.

But as the system stands now. Litterally anyone could upload a piece of **** that costs 1$. and people would not know that it is **** until atleast one paid for it.

No, a patreon system would be far better. Not only making the mods free again, but also making it so that people could pledge/donate money to the hard working modders who deserve it.

It only works under the assumption that everyone who buys mods is a knowledgeable modder themselves who knows how to test and fit the mods into their load orders. Many people aren't and thus, the 24 hour refund ***** them over because they didnt know that the mod was trash until then.

I'm of the opinion that Valve simply isn't a very good company anymore. They have much better PR than Ubisoft or EA so they look nicer, but at the end of the day, they're hardly any better. So, no, I don't think it's just you.

No really, what? I'm confused. I just checked the nexus and all mods still appear to be free. Can someone please explain? My first thought was that you only had to pay on one site, but people are acting like it's completely unavoidable. >.>

I dunno pretty much all of gaming's modding community is in a complete uproar, so something may change or time will simply pass and everyone will eventually accept it.

I for one think a donation button would solve all of this that way its more like "oh man, I love your work, here's some money" instead of 'you're forcing me to buy this for a game I already payed for? this isn't official DLC. how do I know if its good, how do I know if there are any mod conflicts? if this sucks I will track you down, buy a plane ticket, knock on your front door, and beat the **** outta you."

You know I'm all for people getting paid for their work, but this 75% take steam is taking is just plain robbery.

They should have run it like Patreon where you can give money to the modders themselves rather than just get their one mod for $1.00 which only nets the creator 25 cents
