My brother had one of these as his wedding ring, he had to stop wearing it because he'd keep fiddling with it and pinching his skin in the gears

Do they use a planetary gearset like that?
User avatar #41 to #37 - fourfangedferret ONLINE (10/02/2015) [-]
die grinders use the same thing. the pneumatic ones. plus that fancy little turbine enginge thing.
User avatar #42 to #41 - sonicsyndicate (10/02/2015) [-]
true havnt actually done any maintenance on my die grinder yet thanks for reminding me

2 speed rear end, used in big rigs. turning your Eaton ten speed in to a ten speed, or what ever trans of your choice. im not sure who makes the axle DANA maybe
User avatar #72 to #69 - csonosky (10/02/2015) [-]

possibly a reduction? unless the device it is attached to is made to go around in circles.
User avatar #45 to #40 - sonicsyndicate (10/02/2015) [-]
oh i see now that gear to the right moves inward and the top and bottom double gears move up and down to change ratios but i dont see how that could work manually
User avatar #47 to #45 - fourfangedferret ONLINE (10/02/2015) [-]
nah, those gears cant move outwards, look at how they are held in.
User avatar #48 to #47 - sonicsyndicate (10/02/2015) [-]
but notice the space left intentionally at the mounting points in the wells of the gears it could work with a skilled enough engineer making the linkage
User avatar #50 to #48 - fourfangedferret ONLINE (10/02/2015) [-]
but that would only allow inward movement, which would disconnect the drive gear.
User avatar #51 to #50 - sonicsyndicate (10/02/2015) [-]
true youre definatley an engineering student arent you
User avatar #52 to #51 - fourfangedferret ONLINE (10/02/2015) [-]
ive done a bit. im more of a machinist though.
User avatar #53 to #52 - sonicsyndicate (10/02/2015) [-]
cool im just a mechanic you think youre a good enough machinist to machine so heads for me?
User avatar #54 to #53 - fourfangedferret ONLINE (10/02/2015) [-]
depends where you live, and it depends if you have blueprints. i probably could though.
User avatar #55 to #54 - sonicsyndicate (10/02/2015) [-]
i could send them to you and i m planning to rebuild my engine do you own or have access to a block hone machine?
User avatar #56 to #55 - fourfangedferret ONLINE (10/02/2015) [-]
uh. nope. i just have access to some basic equipment at my mates shed. a lathe and a milling machine, plus more hand tools than you can shake a stick at. oh, and a horizontal milling machine. and a few other things.
User avatar #58 to #56 - sonicsyndicate (10/02/2015) [-]
but i might end up calling on you for specialty parts though like a carb spacer or something
User avatar #60 to #58 - fourfangedferret ONLINE (10/02/2015) [-]
as long as you can tell me the exact metals and stuff. oh, and i live in australia. that may be an issue. also, measurements in metric are preferred.
User avatar #61 to #60 - sonicsyndicate (10/02/2015) [-]
i can send a gasket for the carb with it that should be sufficient for measurements since im not great with the metric system and also if i pay you through paypal and send you the materials to work with it shouldnt be a problem right? like we wont have any import laws telling me i cant ship a block of aluminum in and out of aus right?
User avatar #62 to #61 - fourfangedferret ONLINE (10/02/2015) [-]
nah man. unless your shipping radioactive metals, it should be fine.
User avatar #63 to #62 - sonicsyndicate (10/02/2015) [-]
ok cool next time i get paid ill send down a block and some specsalso how much can you find a carbed intake for a U.S ford 302 for down there?
User avatar #64 to #63 - fourfangedferret ONLINE (10/02/2015) [-]
as far as i can tell, up around the 450 mark.
User avatar #66 to #64 - sonicsyndicate (10/02/2015) [-]
basically 318 US then? thats way overpriced

User avatar #57 to #56 - sonicsyndicate (10/02/2015) [-]
well no can do then haha ive already gasket matched all my ports and had my valves enlarged as much as stock 351w heads allow for and as for the block im trying to keep it under 60 thou out trying to keep my block haha
i think its about 200 for a new block but im about 200 bucks short and dont have time either lol
User avatar #44 to #40 - sonicsyndicate (10/02/2015) [-]
well it looks like a differential not sure how that reduction would work unless its a centrifugal action like a mechanical advance distributor
User avatar #46 to #44 - fourfangedferret ONLINE (10/02/2015) [-]
actually... you see how there are two sets of teeth on the large gear? maybe that central shaft and the collar around it on the left are supposed to turn at slightly different rates...
