She used to be our minister of immigration. Did a pretty good job at it.
Haven't heard of any major **** ups on her part yet. Surprisingly enough, she's one of the better ministers we have.
Belgium has **** politicians that are often randomly appointed. Right now we have FOUR ministers of environment duking it out over what we should do for the climate meeting in Paris. We're a tiny country.
Also, at one point we had a minister of simplification, whose slogan was 'Moeilijk gaat ook', which translates 'We'll manage as well when it's difficult'.
We had a minister of finance who showed, in front of a lot of cameras, that she struggled with basic math.
Another beautiful example is a minister of education who wasn't capable of taking the square root of 4
This is from the country where our Prince was caught doing thrice the legal limit on a motorway, then got off scotts free while claiming, and put your French accent on ladies and gents, 'I am not a danger to the people. I have a license of helicopter pilot.'
It's not a joke. But to be fair she is a doctor with like 25 years or more with experience. She is fully aware of her body and some are saying you should judge when she does something wrong.
Health ministery isn't only "eat healthy and don't be fat" it also includes things like health inspection laws for sanitary conditions, epidemiological studies in case of disease outbreaks, etc.
But still her taxing us for sugary drinks, fast food etc is a bit hypocrit if you look at her. would you listen to a fat guy giving fitness advice? Practice what you preach.
Recently she was on a talkshow that showed pictures of her in her teens.
She was skinny on those pictures.
Her wikipedia pages states that she suffers from the 'chronic disease called obesity'.
She's just very, very fat.
Also, feminists in the country have claimed that the patriarchy is trying to keep her down by criticizing her weight, while in their eyes this wasn't done to obese male politicians. A quick search on google proves that fat male Belgian politicians like Jean-Luc Dehaene or Geert Lambert were often ridiculed by headlines mentioning them as 'political heavyweights'. I also remember a popular TV-show that refered to Dehaene as an 'impressive submarine'.
I actually once high fived that guy, when he was still fat.
There was a talkshow where they had built a glass studio on a big square in my hometown. Me and some friends were having a drink at a bar, and saw on TV there that Bart De Wever was on the show, live. Now BDW was at celebrity status for his role in the show 'De Slimste Mens', so we went to go see him.
There was like 100-200 people standing in front of the studio, but we noticed there wasn't anyone standing at the back. Weird thing was: at the back you had the best view of the guests and show host.
So we started waving at BDW, giving each other piggyback rides, dancing, just acting silly. He seemed to be unmoved by our display. But then the show entered a break and he looked in our direction and raised and lowered his hand quickly. It was our victory.
So then we waited at the doors and as he came outside, and I said: 'Mr De Wever, a high five?', which he then gave to me.
We asked him for a picture to which he replied: 'Oh, you are those guys that have been taking drugs from the beginning of the show?'
He did take a pic with us.
TLDR: I told a pretty long tale to explain how a regional politician once acknowledged my existence.
After reading on the subject it turns out that Dr. Barrette was an inspiration for Maggie De Block (women in the post) to make the jump to politics. She called him the MLK of fat people.
They also say that her weight is due to a genetic disease...
One last thing Dr Barrette is an extremely controversial political figure not because of his weight but because of the unpopular measures hes taking to unchoke the overcrowded healthcare system and trying to prepare us for the inevitable baby boomers turning 60-70.
I for one, think hes doing the right thing.
