I'd just be outright wrong. Many people use retarded as a blanket term any time they see someone with a mental disability, but there are many mental disabilities that do not actually make you retarded. Retarded actually specifically refers to having an IQ below 70. For example, I have a friend with tourettes who gets called retarded often, yet he is actually not mentally deficient at all, he simply has a very bad twitch and a verbal tic. His IQ is actually just fine and he does great in school.

Whether you agree with the word retarded being used or not, your analogy is just wrong. Anon 1 was referring to people being called retarded when they are not, your analogy is white people being called white when they are in fact white.

It's just one of those things man, where one word refers to a group of individuals that'd be considered offensive, but to another group it isn't a big deal because it has no meaning. Allow me to explain;

It's considered offensive to call an actual retarded person a retard, call an ordinary person a retard and it's up to them whether they take offense or not, but shouldn't take it personally because they're not actually a retard.

It's considered offensive to call a fat person fat, but if you call some skinny guy eating a plate full of burgers and chips then they'd be called fat, but they shouldn't find it offensive because obviously they're not fat in the literal sense.

It's considered to call a gay person a faggot (which essentially means over the top, flamboyent homo sexual), but if you call a straight person a faggot for acting like a flamboyent homo sexual or wearing gay clothes then it shouldn't or wouldn't be offensive to them. However, again they shouldn't take it personally because they're not apart of the group of individuals whom that word actually has an effect on.

Can't think of anymore examples, but that's essentially how it works. These words are only offensive if they're actually true about the person.

You know, all these acceptance movements are making it worse to be homosexual, transgender, or mentally challenged. I think there was a South Park episode about this, but it's been a while.
Think about it: If something was wrong with you, would you want to be singled out and known for your "disability"? Or remembered for the good you've done? Don't know about you, but I'd sure as **** choose the second option.

If I were transgender, for instance, and I've done some damn fine work bringing my company to the top of the pile, doing better than Microsoft or Apple. If I came out and said I was transgender, BOOM. There goes all my progress, all which I've worked hard to achieve.

My company would still be there, sure, but where would I be? Why, I'd just be on some list of transgenders. Not known for paving the way to the future, but for having a fake vagina/dick. An insignificant number. I'd take ridicule over that any day.

Most retarded people have significant difficulty articulating and understanding "mentally challenged".
Keep the words simple and to the point, and teach them that that is the word that should be used.

Referring to them as retarded makes every real person's life easier.
