I never understood why games companies never do this. We have 360 degree HD cameras. Why can't we play a game in a live action environment yet? Imagine a racing game where you are actually in New York, or a CID game where you are in a live action section of Iraq, etc. Anyone care to explain why it hasn't been done yet? I am genuinely curious.

Probably because of cost. Although you could use the cameras (at significant expense) to capture images of the landscape, you'd still have to create 3D models for each and every object in the image. It makes more sense to create your own 3D models and textures, because that way you can lay out the city or game world how you want to.

But you WOULDN't have to create 3D models. Technology exists that can map out a room or building just using blueprints, or video itself. Combine that with a 360 degree video, and you would be able to make a 3D environment using real life images and textures. The textures would not even be that massive, as they could be used as normal 1080P style textures.

Everything already exists, and not at great expense, at least not great to a multi-million dollar game development company. They just haven't done so yet, for quite literally no reason.

They already do it with faces. Moral Combat, WWE 13, etc. Real life facial textures used in a game environement.

The technology to do so on a large scale, though, is very simplistic currently. Beyond that, though, I imagine there would be a LOT of legal issues if you were to map out and use direct images from, say, New York City. You can't simply plaster tens of thousands of trademarks on a game - you either would need to get permission from each and every person, or you'd have to overwrite them with other textures.

The other thing is that beyond racing games, game worlds are much smaller than their real-life counterparts. GTA IV's Liberty City is hundreds of times smaller than New York City, simply because you can't pack enough content into a city that large. It took humans centuries to add to it in real life, and who knows how long it'd take for a video game.

There was an old arcade game. You played a jet and shoot at other planes/helicopters and stuff. You could god missle, bomb, and lazer upgrades. Anyone know the title.
