Technically, one gigabyte is 1000 megabytes. It's one gibibyte that's 1024 mibibytes. Many OSes as well as most computer users don't distinguish between these two, but hard drive companies does so to save a little money -- if you ever wondered why your 1TB drive is only 900-something GB according to your OS.
