I will say this, though. Some people are just born the wrong gender. Call it mental illness, call it whatever, but some children are just born with the complete opposite gender identity. and no they're not "forced", or "conditioned" (in most cases at least). when you watch how they go about their life it's obvious that it's just their nature. I'd imagine it's pretty traumatizing to have to grow up as the opposite gender, especially when puberty hits. In cases like these, I think it's only good parenting to allow your kid to be who they are, even starting hormones early on. That being said, I DO realize that these cases are very rare, and parents should wait until it's completely obvious before they take action.
Bottom line, forcing your kid to be something they obviously aren't will only damage them further.
