Verified status puts the little blue mark next to someone's twitter name to verify "Yes, this is indeed the actual twitter account of this person." It is granted to suitably famous people. I'm unaware of the precedent for removing verified status, regardless, it's a rather disrespectful move AND can only be done by twitter itself.
