The world of Spongebob is actually a dystopian world in which human pollution caused world wide panic and disruption. The fish mutated and gained human characteristics.

Spongebob's family was one of the first sponges to actually become one of these freakish underwater mutants.

Sandy was a squirrel that moved out of Texas before it became a useless piece of land.

Mermaid Man relaxed in a safe zone in the Gulf Of Mexico, spending his days without a care. When contaminated water got to him while he was swimming, his accidentally drank some, causing some mutations. His lungs were able to take in water and use the oxygen.

Patchy the Pirate roams near the safe zone and never got in. He walks around with the skeleton of his dead parrot, whom he ate out of hunger. Patchy thinks he's somewhere else, but really he's roaming a wasteland.

The ocean changed, the sludge quickly changed everything. Water didn't have the ability to rust metals or destroy electronics... But it wasn't drinkable for humans.

There is about 9 types of fish in that audience. I was thinking to myself "Gee, they copied a bunch of the fish all over the place" but I guess it kind of IS realistic that there are duplicates of character models in this show considering most fish look alike and that's how we classify them as their type of fish.
