Why did he cry? I mean, he wasn't on the ship, right? I know it's sad, many people died. But crying is a very strong emotion so does he have any personal ties to the ship?

He is a titanic expert, he researched The Titanic for years.
As a far is i know he doesn't has any personal ties.
But i can imagine if you work on something for such a long time, heard stories about people on that ship and saw some personal stuff come by, you'll get emotionally involved.

Something about the fact that it's a grown-ass man crying just makes it more sad somehow..

To the people who just aren't getting why he cried
This is a guy who has dedicated his life's work to a sunken ship and its recovery. He's there day after day slowly, carefully, painstakingly doing bit by bit to preserve and rescue one of the monuments of mankind and its greatest tragedy. Out of the dark monotony of this ancient morbid autopsy, when all you are surrounded with is constant death and decay, you get a taste of something beautiful. Like water in the desert you've never had anything more beautiful in your life. A rip in time dredged from the bottom of the blackest abyss, give to us by those long lost we have a glimpse of something wonderful hanging in the air. Something that contrast and sweet would cast a deep pillar in your memories which you could never forget, something you couldn't lose. Enjoy the beautiful things around you, you are loved

C'mon bro, think a bit further than that. The ship is his life goal, he went to university for it and studied like hell to obtain a PhD, he worked around the world for years missing friends and family. And for what? For dead things to most. But when that bottle of perfume opened, it's the epitaph of what he could achieve with all his sacrifices: to experience the ship, to be part of it if only for a few minutes. But those few minutes made everything worth it.

Actually the ship contained every class, there was a VERY large number of lower class citizens who all had to share a very small number of bathrooms, bunk in small rooms with 4 bunk beds, basically prison style. Those were the majority who perished immediately when the bulkheads flooded. Yes there were "posh cunts" but there were also hundreds of middle class and lower class citizens who were on that ship due to some serious penny pinching. Although it doesn't really make a difference, people died and that's kind of all that matters. Ya limey cuntwit

For once FJ feels over something feel worthy, you guys usually ball over a puppy being adopted and **** , or an Ethiopian finding food, but this, this is amazing.

i find that the way he describes it oddly beautiful. This man most likely dedicated years of his life, sorry i didnt see this documentary, to his research. Being surrounded by death is not a happy experience, he was emotionally invested in this, and i felt his struggle of the pain. That was just great..

Is it just me, or does he look like Patton Oswalt, if he had made some other decisions in life?
