I dont think bullying should be punished like this, sure bullies are bad people, but if you teach kids to live sheltered lives they will never learn how to stand up for themselves.

This isn't middle school, you can't beat up a bully. Being an adult, you'll either get beat extremely badly or go to jail for beating up the other person.

We shouldn't teach kids to live sheltered lives, but we also shouldn't condone being an asshole.

that's why I said, sure she's bad. But when they grow up there are going to be assholes who you can't stop from being assholes, teaching them that mommy and daddy will take care of the bullies will no train them in handling it themselves.

Depends on what you mean by "handling it themselves" because we really don't want to be teaching kids it's okay to beat the **** out of somebody for calling you a name when you're an adult. Having the parents get involved is a good non-violent solution that teaches them that if they're assholes an authority figure will put them in their place.

See that right there "Authority Figure" Kids need to be that, take initiative, not have others deal with their problems for them. And yes if this means it coming to blows then that shouldn't be a problem. One of the best ways to solve indifference and 90% of the time afterwards the two will go and get a pint and laugh it off... Now there's all this legal ******** .

Except in life most people aren't going to be authority figures to their peers and teaching kids to solve problem by beating the **** out of it isn't going to do society any favors. In life you'll solve a hell of a lot of problems on your own; but when it comes to handling people being aggressive/dicks the cops are going to handle it better than you are.

Sure, cops do al ot to someone for being an asshole.... Didn't know it was against the law

Harassing people is against the law in a lot of places.
User avatar #17 to #16 - cmcdftw (01/08/2014) [-]
And Harassment is very loosely defined, especially in the court. Where as just being an over all asshole will go unpunished unless someone confronts them about it.

And do what? Punch them and get arrested/fined?
User avatar #19 to #18 - cmcdftw (01/08/2014) [-]
That's why I said it was ******** that if you get in a fight you have yo go through all this legal hassle, but yes if that's what it turns it to... Confront them verbally and if they contest you with proposing a fight one should not be scared to defend his/herself while displaying their opinion about another's behavior

Defending yourself is one thing; going up and punching a guy because he called you fat and wouldn't stop is another. By all means teach kids that if assaulted that they should fight back, but we shouldn't teach kids to hit someone who hasn't hit (or tried to hit) them.
User avatar #21 to #20 - cmcdftw (01/08/2014) [-]
It's no better to tell on the person calling you fat to a teacher or so forth
#22 to #21 - anonymous (01/08/2014) [-]
It's a lot better seeing as you have no legal trouble if you take that route.

Meh, it's no fun
