I'd just like to point out that most orcs were bought up in a harsh, demanding environment that didn't allow for pansies or freelancers. Their bonding experience as an army would put any well off man army to shame, especially considering that, before the war of the ring, they hadn't seen any true combat for ages.

Being the nerd I am I'm gonna say that under the poor leadership of Denethor, knowing that Osgiliath was taken, seeing the sheer numbers of the orc army, and over all knowing that they were fighting for the fate of middle earth probably got to morale and crushed a lot of their spirits. (Also if they were kicking ass then Rohan appearing wouldn't have been nearly as epic!)

To be fair it doesnt matter how well trained or equipped an army is. Just remember the British Army, the best trained in the world, was beaten by a bunch of farmers with little to no combat or military experience

On the one hand, yeah they are highly trained human soldiers so just keeling over and dying is a little silly. At the same time, their steward is saying it's all lost, their captain is presumed dead and the they are facing one of the largest orcish hordes ever. I think any soldier would have their morale crushed at this point and the fact that they could stand even a little is a bloody miracle.

No matter how hard they've been trained, the orcs would've had more combat experience. Not only is fighting the only thing they do, they are also not affected by age, and are immortal in the same way that the elves are. There were orcs in Sauron's army that remembered the time when they served Morgoth..
The average human soldier might have been training since he was what, 15? So say he's been training for 10 years.
The orcs learn fighting and killing from birth, and most of them are maybe twice the age of the average human.

Now, of course many of the orcs attacking Minas Tirith were young, but then there's also the morale of the troops that everyone else already mentioned, what with the human troop morale being at an all time low, and the orcs picking up the scent of blood and fear in the air..

eh these guys are the standard city watch of minas tirith aka a common soldier, not the badass guards of the white tree.

This confused me about helms deep too. The Elves seem to get ****** up by the uruk-hai like they died instantly in melee combat yet legolas is a bloody ninja with his twin swords. Considering they are Immortal you think they would have perfected the art of swordsmanship. If a human can kill an uruk-hai then a bloody elf should be able to.
