So what you're actually buying is a 3 euro lighter and a 47 euro maintenance program.
User avatar #40 to #1 - bitchitroll (12/21/2015) [-]
sucks to be you. last zippo i bought cost $9
User avatar #6 to #1 - notyuu (12/20/2015) [-]
***** , I've got a zippo that dates back to WW2 grandfater got it off an american, woo japanese relations ._ ., complete with bloodied tumb print, scratches, dents and general wear from 73 years of use and abuse and it still ******* works, so you can bet that the ******* lighter with worth more than £2.19
Plus they never go out in the wind or rain
#7 to #6 - randomuploads (12/20/2015) [-]
That's cause you're a dumbass and you think price means the same as quality. You gotta ******* read before you post, I didn't say they were bad lighters, in fact I think they're excellent.
User avatar #11 to #7 - bossmanholms ONLINE (12/20/2015) [-]
You are the dumbass for thinking value (price) is only determine by the cost of materials.
#12 to #11 - randomuploads (12/20/2015) [-]
Oh yeay, I forgot R&D. How stupid of me. I'm sure Zippo invests a huge percentage of it's earnings into developing new kinds of metal boxes. Oh and shipping of course. You can only fit about 2.76 billion zippos in one container so yeay, that adds up prety fast. Marketing too, can't go 4 seconds on the internet without a Zippo pop-up, am I right.

I can totally see where the 30-50 euro pricetag comes from.
User avatar #13 to #12 - bossmanholms ONLINE (12/20/2015) [-]
Marketing costs man.
User avatar #8 to #7 - notyuu (12/20/2015) [-]
if they only used 3 cheesits to buy the materials and put the damn thing together then it would fall the **** apart after a couple of years, nothing in this ****** world made cheaply lasts for more than a few years.
#9 to #8 - randomuploads (12/20/2015) [-]
How expensive do you want your lighter production? It's just a question of folding some steel into a box and inserting some parts. Wouldn't be more than a few dollars even if you did it by hand.
#21 to #9 - Skwurll (12/21/2015) [-]
$8 wind-proof engraved lighter that'll last me forever, free maintenance, refillable, cheaper than buying disposables after a while.

> You stupid sheep, you're wasting your money. You're an idiot for buying one. Overpriced **** , blah blah blah

Yeah, ok buddy.

Even chrome ones are $10 on amazon. The $50 ones are art pieces.

What?
#3 to #2 - randomuploads (12/20/2015) [-]
They're rather expensive, considering they're not an awful lot more than a tiny metal box.
User avatar #4 to #3 - ratytang [OP](12/20/2015) [-]
they are wind proof lighters you can light them anywhere pluss the last a long time, you can still find zippos from the first world wars that still work, cant say that about many other lighters
#5 to #4 - randomuploads (12/20/2015) [-]
I didn't say they were bad lighters, I said the production costs of each unit is very low compared to the retail price.
#19 to #5 - Stevethewizard (12/21/2015) [-]
I picked one up for $5 retail. A genuine Zippo, not some knock-off. If you're paying more than $8 for one, you're either in some back-ass part of the world, or you're paying for aesthetics.
50 Euro, at the current exchange rate, is roughly $54 US. So, long story short, you're either getting ****** up the ass for living in the middle of nowhere (which doesn't seem likely, given you have internet access), or you're basing your price off of the pricey "custom" Zippos.
#41 to #19 - armegeddon (12/21/2015) [-]
I live near the Zippo factory in Bradford, PA. The typical price of a plain Zippo (depending on state and sales tax) is around $5. The "fancy" ones which look a lot better IMO run upwards of $20 due to the cost of engraving or elctroplating them. Plus the farther away you get from the factory, the more expensive they become because of shipping costs. The same Zippo that you bought for $5 in the U.S. will cost more oversees due to the shipping and import taxes.
User avatar #22 to #1 - thedungeonmaster (12/21/2015) [-]
Sucks to be you then. In Canada, you can buy them for like $20. The States is probably even cheaper.
#15 - codydunavin (12/21/2015) [-]
Not a Zippo, rather, it's a Colibri by Kreisler (mafd in East Germany) That my great greandfather was awarded by the Local Ford Motor Company as an award. As you can see it was gifted to him in 1959, **** still works yo.

What do my fellow smokers smoke?

Cigars; usually Oliva Series v Melanio Box Press
Cigarillo; either Dutch Masters or Acid C-Notes
#26 to #20 - Matengel (12/21/2015) [-]
I like me a good Rocky Patel, but I haven't smoked enough yet to know many brands or anything

I like mid grade cigars. My favorite are Camachos, but I can only ever buy them when I go to Washington DC because they don't sell them in WI.

Only camel turkey royals.
Go to literally any site on the internet that reviews cancerpuffpuffsticks and be buried underneath the nigh perfect reviews.

Everyone should try them if they haven't. Even if they hate cigs. Especially if they hate cigs.
They're smoother than a black patrick stewart covered in honey.
User avatar #34 to #20 - smokejmac (12/21/2015) [-]
Hey I'm not trying to sound like an ass or pretentious or a pretentious ass but why do you smoke? because like i've smoked cigarettes a couple of times and i don't see the pull i guess? I just want to know what you see in it because maybe I'm missing something. again, I'm just asking so sorry if i come off as an ass.
User avatar #39 to #34 - mendelevium (12/21/2015) [-]
Cigars are obviously different in that you don't inhale, so logically I see it as less of a risk (whether or not that's true is up for debate)

Besides that my dad always smokes and he is pretty much the coolest guy around and when I was 16 in the bahamas we smoked out first cigar together and he taught me all the tricks and how to "control your substance and not let it control you" so you never form bad habits.

I smoke once or twice a month and NEVER because I am stressed, I always do it as a "this is a good day, I should smoke". I personally find cigarettes unattractive and would never even think about that, or weed, just chill with a glass of scotch while reading or doing work.
User avatar #44 to #39 - smokejmac (12/21/2015) [-]
Oh, okay I didn't know you don't inhale. Thanks man, it makes quite a bit more sense now.

Odd coincidence, my holiday season has consisted of Black and Milds
Evan Williams and occasionally jager as a nightcap.
And oddly enough A Feast For Crows.
I'm like the dollar store variety of you.
User avatar #23 to #20 - heartlessrobot ONLINE (12/21/2015) [-]
I don't even smoke and I know you don't light a cigar with a zippo. Butane torch or wood match. You don't use anything else.

The Zippo fuel sort of sucks, it evaporates on it's own in a few days even if you do not use it and it remains closed.

That being said I have found that lamp oil (specifically paraffin oil) to be a suitable replacement with the following advantages and disadvantages:
+does not evaporate
+cheap, and an entire bottle should last years
+more viscous, so it should resist leakage unless the lighter is way overfilled
-flash point is higher than normal atmospheric and body temperatures so it's harder to ignite
-takes longer for the flame to reach full size due to the warm-up time
-i believe it makes the lighter less wind proof as a direct result of the previously stated disadvantages
User avatar #14 to #10 - grandmabetty (12/21/2015) [-]
Well it's not really the fuel that's at fault, it's the lighter... That's the compromise you're making when you're buying a Zippo as opposed to a disposable, they're not 100% sealed and so this will happen. No matter what lighter fuel you put in it, like naphtha or liquid butane, it's gonna evaporate eventually because that's what it does at room temperature

Yes, zippo will take care of their lighters regardless, free of charge just gotta send them in. However, if you do make damn sure theres no wick, cotton or flint in it. It may get lost in the postal system because the contents of the lighter are dangerous materials. My neighbor sent in like 7 of his zippos and got none of them back because he left the cotton in them.
