no, this was an East German soldier sneaking over the Berlin wall to see his family. I'd give a source but I read it in a history book a few years ago.

It actually is an east-german soldier. The rifle he is carrying on his back is the russian PPSch-41 which was used by the east-german KVP/NVA under the name MPi 41.

that's a soldier of the people's army of the GDR. he's got a GDR uniform and a russian smg. but why would he help that boy to get to the east side of the wall ?

After WW2 Berlin was split into East and West which split families when the Berlin Wall was put up, and loads of people tried to cross but soldiers were ordered to shoot people who crossed over the wall
