Aw dude it's arite. Thing is I highly doubt the sole purpose of sea shanties was what you say it was. Pretty certain it was mainly used as a moral buff during strenuous work unboard a vessel. The sailors were probably mostly tone-deaf though. Maybe there was this one guy who sang the entire song and the chorus was sung by the rest of the crew. A friend told me a crew would hire a bard for this purpose in those days but I don't know where he got that info from.
Thank you ! I've been searching for this song for quite a while when I first stumbled upon it on FJ some time ago, but couldn't remember it. Thanks for giving the source !
There's some unexplained beauty listening to old sea related songs, can't quite put my finger in a way to explain them, as if you communicate with your ancestors in a way. Guess its because they are passed down through generations as traditions so they are preserved.
There´s a Shanty-Band called Santiano, here in Germany, they got prety big during the last years. It´s kinda amusing seeing a shanty-record right in the middle of the charts between Kanye West, Taylor Swift and the likes.
Hot damn do I love David Coffin. He's been the Master of Ceremonies for the Christmas Revels in Boston for as long as I can remember and he is a fantastic showman, person to talk to at intermission, and singer.
**kanatana used "*roll picture*"** **kanatana rolled image** I got some ******* SHIVERS while listening to this. I just love sea shanties. Thanks a bunch, OP! You're a cool guy!
