Throughout history Jews were the ones giving loans, importing exotic merchandise, doing other money (capital) related business (or most of the people doing it were Jews so the stereotype was born).

jews were the only ones allowed to loan money with interest... thats one of the main reasons of all the hardships they had to go through and why they are seen as greedy and stingy.

zaywoot (10/16/2013) [-] the reason they are fiscally responsible is because jews by law couldn't be taken as apprentices for different crafts work, you know like carpentry or making shoes or whatever, nor could they own land, so farming was out of the question, plus the catholic church had jews working the treasury as working with money was looked down upon for some reason...
Basically the only option was as businessmen, make that generation upon generation of shopkeepers and businessmen and bankers, plus some general dislike from the people around them, badabing badaboom, jews...

howunexpected (10/16/2013) [-] The Catholic church disallows persons of the cloth from handling money in any way that is not directly charitable or required for their own needs. The vow of poverty is worded in such a way that basically disallows priests and nuns from owning any significant sum of money, and having it in hand it considered temporary ownership by papal law.
This is still a thing, churches always have a trusted member of the congregation handle the money.
The vow isn't enforced anymore though, which is why some priests have Mercedes
