You can be literal or you can be normal and think of the common term.
A laser can open a can but it's not a can opener..

But for that moment it is a can opening laser

an item is made for a certain purpose, and some times named for that purpose, A.K.A a can opener, is an item made specifically to open cans, that is it's main purpose, it could be used for others things, but it's main usage is to open cans, as such its named that way.

a knife, is used for cutting, just because it can open cans, does not mean it was designed to open cans, as such it will not be named a can opener, even if it's opening a can.

You can use a can opener for something other than opening a can?
User avatar #27 to #26 - broswagonist ONLINE (01/04/2016) [-]
But you can, because as long as you use it to open a can the knife is a can opener. It can also be a cheese cutter or a butter spreader, if you want. Unfortunately, the can opener can never stop being a can opener. Pity the can opener.

not true, I'm pretty sure that "can opener" is a title or adjective, a knife can open a can, but its purpose is not specifically opening cans, as I mentioned, so it's not titled "CAN OPENER", while a can opener is "titled" can opener, because its purpose is to open cans..

a knife doesn't really have a specific purpose when you think about it, it can be used to multiple things, while a can opener is made specifically for opening cans, understand? or do you wish to continue dragging this through stupid philosophical sentences to try and make yourself sound correct..

There's no argument here, if you can use it to open cans you can call it a can opener. And a can opener is always a can opener but you can also call a knife a can opener despite this not being its one true destiny. A knife is a jack of all trades, master of none, but a can opener is a specialist. If I was looking for a good can opener, I'd probably buy a can opener and not a knife.

You can be literal or you can be normal and think of the common term nothing is wrong nothing is right but thinking of the common term is commonly right.

Often soldiers in the civil war wouldn't know how to open thicker cans they were given so they'd shoot the cans open.
User avatar #5 to #4 - lipidregent (01/04/2016) [-]
That sounds like it'd be incredibly messy.

Napoleon's soldiers were known to do it too.
User avatar #29 - rodiganschmidt ONLINE (01/04/2016) [-]
Obviously they just stockpiled unopenable cans for a few decades and kept canning things knowing it was an investment into a magucal future time whne you would be able to open the can and find out what was inside after all those years

never bothered acquiring a can opener. always used knives
User avatar #17 - Funnel (01/04/2016) [-]
The math is kinda off on that one, canned food appeared in the 1770s, can openers appeared in the 1850s.
User avatar #16 - kungfuchedder ONLINE (01/04/2016) [-]
I think there are two types of can-openers, the hand-crank one is probably what is referenced in the picture but there are those can-openers that are just jagged blades you stab into the can and saw open.
