Sex is the biological male or female, as determined by the presence of xx or xy chromosome pairs. There are actual chromosomal disorders, such as Turners syndrome, where there are missing or extra chromosomes, and this can create an androgynous appearance. Generally, though, the word 'sex' refers to a binary male or female. Gender refers to socially constructed ideas about what sorts of behaviors represent a certain gender. In our society, we have two genders, masculine and feminine, and have expectations for each gender. For example, sports are supposedly masculine, while dolls are feminine, even though there is nothing biologically preventing a boy from liking dolls, and vice versa. These are just ideas created by society over many generations, and change along with other cultural and social changes. Gender IS a social construct, sex is biological. Humans have two sexes, but some cultures do have more than two genders. Some plains Indians back in the day had a third gender, which consisted of biological males who chose to take on the roles of females, and who could even be married to other men, yet they would not be considered to be 'men pretending to be women', there is just a third category or "gender" for that. I'm not defending all the people who are attention whoring by claiming fake genders, but I must defend the position that gender fluidity does exist, even though some people misuse that concept. I hope this clears up something (though I probably made it more confusing). I have a BA in Anthropology from NC State, so I"m not just speaking out my ass here.

Quick note for future posts: if you really want somebody to read something, people are more likely to read a stickied comment than a description.

Pic related. It's my gender.
There's a reason you need a thorough mental checkup before you get a sex change operation (at least in Denmark). It's because if you cannot distinguish between fantasy and reality, it's called a psychosis, and only in a very few cases is the best treatment to adapt reality to fantasy.
Transgendered people who genuinely believe they are a(n) [X] trapped in the body of a [Y] are literally mentally ill.
I believe, however, that most of them just want to feel special and progressive - the desire for the latter without a doubt being a manifestation of how much information is available to them about people who did great things.

I say it depends on who. I know a girl and a guy who both went into sex change. From kindergarten we knew the girls really wasn't a girl, by the way she was, by the way she saw herself, etc.. As for the guy, he was in is mid 20s when he decided to change sex. it was that or the rope, he couldn't live anymore with the feeling of being a girl but seing a guy every time he looked in the mirror

the girl hasn't changed sex yet tho, she wants to wait for the 20s too. but now she does everything like a boy, minus the penis. and honestly, i haven't seem them both better with themselves before they decided to go for it.
