When I was working at Subway I felt the same way, but I decided to rationalize it by thinking it was a minigame.

Now repeat after me:

"Some may call this junk, me I call them treasures."

Hes literally just that guy who just has two lines and is meaningless to the person interacting with them.

Behind the register, I decided everybody else was the NPC. They were the ones giving me quests and standing around like an idiot until I came back with their food. Half the time they didn't even bother to change the script between characters.

Seriously though, when you're behind the counter, you can interact with hundreds of people a day. Even if it's only for a minute or so, you can have an interesting conversation. Go off the script and play around. It's a lot easier to be enthusiastic about your job if you find a way to make it fun. When you're happy, the customer's happy. When the customer's happy, your boss is happy. When the boss is happy, it makes work much easier for you.
