A mother (or mum/mom/mam) is a woman who has raised a child, given birth to a child, and/or supplied the egg which in union with a sperm grew into a child. The definition can also be extended to non-human animals and may then also include being the animal that donated a body cell which has resulted in a clone.[1][2][3][4] Because of the complexity and differences of a mother's social, cultural, and religious definitions and roles, it is challenging to specify a universally acceptable definition for the term.

This is due to greater individualism through the independence brought on by culture and technology. On the whole, this is good for the everyone except the people who rely on others to act a certain way in order to achieve their own happiness. Now, we have less ties to our families and more ties to the people who we see value in. This is liberating to the individual who has lost the parent lottery and bad for the empty-nester who has devoted all their friendship to their children, who will grow up and pursue their own interests. "Fragmented" means that we are able to distance ourselves from those who were arbitrarily given to us (family) and unite instead with friends who we'd rather spend time with. "Antisocial" is a generic term used by socialists to condemn capitalists. In a way, the family today is more social than before because now people can cross distance, cultural differences, and family lines more easily, which allows the greatest mixing of society rather than staying divided into family bubbles.
