Unfortunately this reminds me of my cat, several years ago.

He was an outdoor/indoor cat, so he got let out all the time. Sometimes he'd be gone for a few days. It wasn't shocking when he didn't come home every night. Generally he did, but not always. He was a stray cat that we took in. A short, stubby, but fairly bulky black cat that we named "Tar". Black, like pavement. My family always named animals after their appearance.

Anyways, I loved this cat. I didn't have many friends through middle or high school. So coming home to chill with him was awesome. He slept with me and was just a laid back and friendly cat.

One day he left the house and didn't come back for a couple days. Which seeing he did so every once in a while, it wasn't a big deal. But after a few days, each day calling his name for him to come back... you begin to worry. Plus, the day he went missing, was the first day it snowed that year. And it snowed pretty harshly.

Nine days went by. And on that day I had given up. Cats had come and gone like this before. And it was easier that way, for me, to get over it. I was upset, but I was able to deal with it. But then the next day, our neighbor called. "Do you guys have a large black cat?"

My first thought was one of the several other cats we had outside, at the time. But it suddenly hit me that it was Tar that they were talking about. Immediately grabbed my mom and drove over to their house. When we got there, he was growling and hissing at the neighbors. He didn't want anyone near him. But as soon as I called his name, he perked right up and... walked, to me. If you could call it that. He was hurt really bad. I knelt down beside him and he tried as hard as he possibly could to crawl into my lap, but it seemed like only his front half was even working. I'll admit, I cried like a little baby.

We ended up taking him to the vet. And with all the things wrong with him, they could only come up with one story....

He was extremely dehydrated, several patches of fur were "thumped" from his back side. His hip was dislocated, and a hind leg had been severely chewed on, and extremely swollen and infected. He was in extremely bad shape. The only thing the vet could assume happened, was that he ended up getting hit by a car, causing the thumpings on his side and dislocating his hip. Then, when he couldn't walk, another animal must have attack him, causing the gnawing on his leg. It had just turned to winter, with all the snow. Which means water was hard to find, causing the dehydration. There was a lot of scar tissue on the inside of his hip, suggesting that he was hit by the car on the very first day he was let out...

Meaning, he wandered off somewhere far away, and got hit by a car. And for the next 10 days, he dragged himself across the countryside, trying to get back home. When he finally did, all he wanted was to be in my lap, to pur, and to sleep. He was drained of all energy, and was just so happy to be back with me.....

He ended up dying about a week later. It was too much of a shock on the poor cat. He had many surgeries before. been in a lot of fights. Had a lot of problems. And he always fought threw it. He was a tough cat. But all this was just too much on him. He was so weak the day he passed. Laying on a giant pillow that was just for him. I had to leave for school... But the last thing I remember is how he was laying there, almost motionless, but still managing to pur and be happy, just because I was there with him....

I shouldn't have went to school that day. I should have stayed home with him. I hate myself for not doing so....

I miss him. Very much.

I recognize this story, have you posted it before? (NOT saying that you are lying, a lot of people loose their cats to the "wild")

Anyhow, it made me cry and I hugged my cats so much that they are now keeping their distance...

I may have posted it before. If I did, it was a long time ago. Couple years, perhaps. Maybe not as detailed. Maybe as an anon. *shrugs*

I have another black cat, atm. I can't resist them. =(

Her name is Doodle and she's a pain in the ass, but she's my baby. And she thinks she owns me. haha. She's about a year old now, but is still kinda small, compared to all the other cats we have (8 total >.>)

Yes. It makes me tear up every time I think about him. Especially how I could have stayed with him, but didn't. =(

Why did I keep reading? Why did I keep reading? Trying not to cry like a little bitch.

You are lucky to have been loved like that. I feel for ya.

"Why did I keep reading?"

Curiosity killed the cat, I guess.

Have a hug.

At least you found him before he passed, so he was warm and safe when he did.
Cats choose their people, and Tar chose you. He's still there, you just can't see him.

My mum's cat, Tiffy, passed away in her sleep in her favourite spot, asleep next to me. My dad had gotten her for my mum before I was born. She was a gorgeous chocolate brown and white calico. She hated me at first, but she soon became one of my guardians, and (I think) was happy to have my cat, Tiger, join us when I was 6. I was getting rather lively at that point an she was getting older (around 10 years). She passed on when I was fourteen. I still tear up when I think of her. I wish I had pictures of her.

I had another black cat, named Midnight. It was when I was quite a bit younger, so I was energetic and stuff. I harassed him quite a bit. Prolly annoyed the hell out of him. But I loved him a lot, too.

He got old, though (like 18 years?). One day I stayed the night at a friend's house, and when I came home, he was, what I thought, was asleep on my bed. I went up to hug him, and... it was just the worst feeling ever. As soon as I touched him I realized he was gone.

It was sad and all, but looking back on it, I'm glad that he felt comfortable enough to curl up in my bed in his last hours.

Yeah..I usually slept with a hand on Tiffy - I do that with Tiger now too, as he's getting on in years. He's about 16 I think.

It was weird waking up that day...she was cold except for where my hand was..

I wish I had a black cat. Their fur wouldn't show up on my clothes (I wear mostly black) as bad as Tiger's does, but I wouldn't trade him for the world.

Pic related, its of Tiger in my clever cat trap.

Haha, I just put out a shoe box for the cats last night. Unfortunately one of them peed on it so that didn't last long. =(

<<< That's a picture of Doodle. My current pain in the ass. She was in the basement so she had cobwebs all over her face, and I somehow managed to get the picture taken at just the right moment, to get her tongue like that.
