It was the best MMORPG its in 2003-2007 form. it was very simple, easy to get into and interesting (the story was actually really good as it was fleshed out). Then it just.....I dont have a word for it.

They made stupid changes and added pointless features that detracted from the overall experience?

Actually, the story right now is not half bad, all things considered.

Guthix is dead, his godly magic is leaking everywhere, other gods are returning, fighting, making alliances, etc. The main hero characters have some nice story quests, and while Divination is pretty boring, at least when Invention EVENTUALLY comes out we'll have fun. (seriously, **** everyone who voted for Elven City Priffiddas)

The game itself is dying horribly right now though. After spending all the time and money on EoC, they go and release 07 worlds for people. Then, right when EoC was tweaked to be bearable, Jagex decides to spend a ton of money and time to allow people to switch between original and EoC, basically destroying the 07 servers.

It's sad really. I remember when Jagex was an actual good company, which stood up for it's values. How the mighty have fallen.

It's not dying, it's just on a slight rough patch as they're trying to get the game mechanics up to date with what the players expect.

And to call the story not half bad is an understatement. It's on par at least with Eragon, possibly even A Song of Ice and Fire, way above the level any other MMO provides.

JaGEx is still as good as ever, they're just more relaxed and approachable as we're entering an era of developers that interact with the players and get their input.

But see, that was the beauty of Runescape. In every other MMO, you mash buttons, hit procs, and only do combat. But Runescape was more laid back. If you wanted to just skill, there was a place for you. Combat was simple because it wasn't the focus of the game, like it is for WoW.

Runescape was the MMO for people with low end computers with terrible ping. It was fun, peaceful, and basic in a wholesome way.

And by the way, Eragon's story is near identical to Star Wars, just saying.

Jagex has turned it's back on the values it was founded on. For over a decade, their firm stance was that the only way you could pay to get advantages was monthly membership. No micro transactions, no buying levels, nothing besides the 5.99 a month.

That motto and mindset was completly destroyed the moment they released the Loyalty Programme. I was a player at the time, and I could feel the cold winds of change that had hardened Jagex's hearts.

I've returned now and again, but the only part I like anymore is Dungeoneering, since it hasn't changed since I left.

Combat is still not the focus of the game. They just had to expand it because they had exhausted what could be done with the old system, and all the stuff they added is still optional except under specific circumstances, same as it has always been with pots, specs and prayers.

And you still can't buy your way into a benefit. The Loyalty Programme is only about continued membership and doesn't offer anything useful beyond the auras, the Squeal of Fortune is such a game of chance that if you have the luck to benefit from it you're better off hunting expensive drops and Solomon's General Store is purely for cosmetic overrides.
There's also Bonds, which have now introduced a way for people to buy membership with in-game money, reducing the difference the ability to pay makes.

One where the focus of Runescape is still lore and questing, and where any combat is optional unless a quest's story requires you to defeat someone.

Just look at the world events, they are essentially open warfare, yet you've got the option of disregarding combat altogether and just do skilling.

Compare this to other MMOs, where everything else is just flavor added so that the combat isn't going to get too boring, where nothing other than attacks are even animated and you've only got kill/fetch quests.

No, pokemon is a pet fighting simulator for people who are too squirmish to train the family dog to fight to the death.

If we're just talking about video games Pokemon is good, but Chronor Trigger is the best RPG of all time. If we're expanding to all mediums, nothing comes close to D&D.
