A Synthetic lightsaber crystal, commonly referred to as a Synth-crystal, is a type of lightsaber crystal that is artificially created, rather than naturally formed by geological processes. Due to the methods used in their creation, they often formed with a red coloration, though they could be made with any color through special manipulations of either the creation process or the crystal itself, often through the Force, such as the green synth-crystal powering Luke Skywalker's second lightsaber.

Though synthetic crystals were ordinarily unsuitable for use in lightsabers, the Sith discovered that they could create synth-crystals that were energized, magnetized, and modified with the power of the dark side of the Force in special furnaces, causing the crystal to glow in harmonic vibration.

As a result of their artificial origins, synthetic crystals created more powerful lightsaber blades and could be more easily augmented. Also, their common usage by Sith and other Darksiders after this discovery caused synthetic crystals to become something of a staple among such groups, and their use among Jedi was strongly discouraged.

Most synthetic crystals were red, a result of the forging process, and oftentimes the initiate's intentional manipulations, as most individuals who utilized synthetic crystals were Darksiders. The red-hued lightsaber blades generated by such crystals were often nicknamed "bloodshine blades". The crystal's ability to change to reflect the intentions of the creator could be said to foster a stronger bond between the resulting lightsaber and the wielder. However, synth-crystals could be made in any color, requiring only slight adjustments of the creation process and special manipulations through the Force during the forging.

CREATION
Synthetic lightsaber crystals were manufactured within a machine known as a geological compressor. The original purpose of the compressor was to replicate geological conditions on distant worlds in a laboratory setting, and it was easily adapted for creating synth-crystals; simply replicating the geological processes that create crystals.

The raw materials that the crystal was fashioned from were easily accessible, simply being minerals with a high carbon concentration. The raw minerals would be placed within the machine and essentially left to bake for a period ranging from twenty-four hours to four days, during which time, the initiate creating the crystal would meditate on it with the Force, guiding the formation and increasing the potency. This level of control over the formation process allowed initiates to create crystals that best suited their needs.

Standard
A standard synthetic crystal was created through the successful replication of the geological structure of natural crystals. Standard crystals set the baseline for synthetic crystals in general; they generated a more powerful lightsaber blade than natural crystals, and often demonstrated a red coloration, though that was easily controlled.

In fact, synth-crystal blades were so powerful that they had the rare potential to "break the blade" of standard lightsabers by overloading the energy matrix and instantly burning out the other lightsaber. Though this happened extremely rarely, it was a known and frightening possibility in combat.

Synthetic Lightsaber Crystals. A Synthetic lightsaber crystal, commonly referred to as a Synth-crystal, is a type of lightsaber crystal that is artificially cre

Compressed
Compressed synth-crystals were a result of a failure to accurately replicate the natural geological process that formed crystals. The result was a crystal that was far more compressed than natural crystals, causing the blade generated to be considerably thinner than standard blades. However, a byproduct of this thinner blade was that it allowed for greater precision and control. In addition to a thinner blade, the other visual indicators for a blade generated by a compressed synth-crystal were oscillations of energy that rapidly ran along the length of the blade at regular intervals.

Unstable
Like compressed crystals, unstable crystals were the result of the initiate failing to accurately replicate the natural formation processes of crystals. The blades generated by unstable crystals were obviously more unstable than the norm, causing the blades generated to crackle with energy at erratic intervals, sometimes causing sparks to fly or streaks of electrical energy to run along the length. Due to the energy sparking from the blade, unstable synth-crystals caused more damage than normal when they hit enemies. However, they were much more prone to shorting out, causing the lightsaber to deactivate for a time.

Usage
The primary reason for the usage of synthetic crystals among Sith and other Darksiders was the need to stay hidden, as most of the sites where natural crystals suitable for lightsabers could be gathered were frequented by the Jedi Order. Eventually, synth-crystal usage among such groups became a tradition, with most members considering the creation of a synthetic crystal superior to the more passive Jedi method of gathering of natural formations, which was looked on as relying on the "untamed wilds of space" to provide. In fact, synthetic crystal creation was viewed by Darksiders to be a sign of greater mastery over the Force.

Question for star wars nerds:

Would it be theoretically possible in the star wars universe to create a light saber that does not emit light in the visible spectrum?
ie, it would have a colorless, lightless blade (perhaps only barely visible from the mirages produced by the heated air), but is still just as lethal as a standard lightsaber.
User avatar #106 to #24 - meganinja (01/01/2016) [-]
It would be a lot more dangerous to yourself. You know, more likely to hurt yourself if you can't see the blade and such.

from my understanding, the crystals used all are colored on the visible spectrum. Wanting a clear lightsaber would be like wanting a clear sapphire... at that point it is no longer a sapphire. Though with the synthetic color manipulation process it might be possible, and you have piqued my interest...

User avatar #37 to #24 - sphincterface (12/31/2015) [-]
The coloration of the saber is based on the crystal. If you wanted a clear lightsaber blade, the crystal would have to be completely transparent.
User avatar #105 to #37 - novus (01/01/2016) [-]
My guess is (within the SW universe) that would make a white blade, not a see-through blade. The blades are supposed to be plasma, and to my knowledge there is no plasma in the real world that does not emit some visible light, so I'm betting Star Wars would have something similar. Clear blades would be pretty OP
User avatar #126 to #105 - alpako ONLINE (01/01/2016) [-]
but it would definitely make it interesting.
at first it would be op, but later on, both sides might end up having it
User avatar #40 to #24 - datassman (12/31/2015) [-]
Contrary to what the guys below me are saying, I wouldn't say so. Dadhhg's analysis is pretty clear, but one thing to remember is that lightsabers are, on the most basic level, little more than plasma cutters. The nature of plasma as superheated particles means that they're gonna give off light. So basically: clear, yes; lightless, no.
#104 to #40 - uhhyeahfmebaby (01/01/2016) [-]
But we cant see all light, so, as he is saying, which still kind of remains unanswered is, can it be manipulated to create light outside of the visible spectrum.
User avatar #65 to #24 - chaosraptor (01/01/2016) [-]
imagine it

start waving around a light saber with a beam that cannot be seen by human eye

fight some jedi... he thinks youre just ******* with him, all hes sees is the saber hilt and no blade. goes in to attack you, gets cut to **** by invisible blade
#30 to #24 - Dadhhg (12/31/2015) [-]
Yes, but not effective. Light sabers emit light from all spectrum below their primary, which is determined by their frequency, to make an invisible lightsaber you would need the power level to be infrared or lower in a much less powerful blade, an ultraviolet or greater lightsaber would be far more powerful than standard, but would also emit all lower frequencies of light, causing it to appear white.
Uv and greater lightsabers would cause health issues for people around them, including the user, radiation burns to the skin and eyes mainly, and thus are not suitable as weapons.
#119 to #30 - DDay (01/01/2016) [-]
Imagine it, some jedi of an alien species immune to UV radiation using a lightsaber that produces UV light, he would be like a walking plague.
User avatar #7 - thepizzadevourer ONLINE (12/31/2015) [-]
Interesting note: Luke's second lightsaber (the green one) used a synthetic crystal. He decided it would be too difficult, and take too much time, to find a natural one when he needed to rescue Han. This is from Legends lore, though.

A lightsaber can be anything as long as it has the core items needed to emit the blade...otherwise, without the blade, it's not a lightsaber.

You have shoto lightsabers, lightsaber pikes, double bladed sabers, cross guard lightsabers, the traditional lightsaber, massive lightsabers for larger species, lightsaber whip, and so forth and so on.

Any type of bladed melee weapon has the ability to be a lightsaber. Hell, I'm sure even a lightsaber that looks like an axe is possible since it's ******* sci-fi.
User avatar #86 to #75 - XDRyuDX (01/01/2016) [-]
yeah kinda like in gundam how the zaku have a Heat Axe witch is a super heated blade but im sure you can form the bean into an axe like with a mobile suit in zeta ( i forget the name its a big green thing with a beam axe)
User avatar #87 to #86 - millennial (01/01/2016) [-]
I'm not sure how feasible it is in the pre-established Star Wars Lore, but with Sci-Fi all you have to do is just give a character one of them and bam some nerd will make up some ******** reasoning as to why it works in the lore.
I mean **** , if they could make a Lightsaber Whip I'm sure a Lightsaber battleaxe isn't too out of the blue.

According to wookieepedia Kylo Ren's crystal is actually a natural crystal he found in a cave like any other jedi would as well, OP's picture showing Kylo ren's lightsaber makes it seem like his lightsaber crystal is a synthetic one, when in fact it is not.
#67 to #66 - skeletorexplains ONLINE (01/01/2016) [-]
I would argue that according to the wookieepedia article that the lightsaber itself (Being unstable and all that) forces the crystal to be "Red" since it doesn't really go into detail as to what color it is, It simply just says "Kyber crystal"

In the flashbacks if memory serves Kylo had a blue lightsaber, and in the article it states that "Kyber crystals lack color and get a color once chosen by a jedi / sith" so either it changed when he went evil or the lightsaber itself forced its change.

But yeah, Technicalities aside, Not a synth.
