The Joker' s true backstory has intact
to this day, never been finalised, with multiple it
orgins stories all existing with varying credibility
including 'Batman Black and White' of 2002
where the Joker was the leading crime boss as
well as 'Batman Confidential' s 2007 origins of the
Joker being a depressed and suicidal career i
criminal.
The most widely accepted orgins story tor the Joker is Alan Moore' s
1988, The Killin Joke, in which the Joker an unnamed engineer who

miserably. Desperate to support his preg

died in a household accident. The engi, eer

A criminals force him into keeping his
commitment to them.
At the plant, the criminals make him wear a special
mask for the engineer to become the infamous Red Hood.
Unknown to the engineer, the criminals plan to use this
disguise to implicate their accomplice as the
mastermind and to divert attention away from
themselves. Once inside, they run into security
personnel, and a shootout ensues. The
criminals are gunned down and the
engineer finds himself confronted by /
Batman, who is investigating the
disturbance. Terrified of the Batman,

and is swept through a pipe leading to the outside.
Once outside, he discovers, to his horror,
that the chemicals have permanently
bleached his skin , stained his

it the man' s misfortunes of that one day, drives
him completely insane .
r that the joker is one of. if not the best villain in history
k across all mediums of art. Personally. Batman comics
are the greatest of the medium and his villains are too. so
expect them to occur more frequently than most villains of
other heroes or comics.
I greatly enjoyed making this

When the first of the two escapees offers to let the other cross the light, he replies with 'do you think I'm crazy?" but then says that the first escapee will turn off the light. it is initially implying that the second escapee is smart enough to know that he cannot travel along the light provided, but then follows it up with his fear of his friend turning i off. this reflects that maybe he was in the asylum for a reason.

I kept thinking deeper when i first saw it, i thought that it symbolised the relationship between the joker and batman, Batman wants to help the joker but he is convinced he will drop out halfway or something
User avatar #109 to #64 - kinginthenorth (06/03/2014) [-]
That is the meaning tho.
Joker fears that he can't be helped by batman (he offered help prior to this scene), because the Batman would eventually realize that the Joker is a lost cause.

Personally, I feel like the Joker is overrasted. Dont get me wrong, He isn't a bad villian by a long shot, I think his a good one, actually. But the levels to which the Internet tend to elevate him, just gives off a really bad stench, if you ask me.

On a criticcal level, you have to conceide the point that "His family was killed, and it drove him craaaazy " is a pretty standard backstory. Of course the back story dosen't make the character.

I agree that he had been over played as of late. Due to his popularity spike with amazing comic stories, the greatest portrayal of a comic book villain in cinematic history and the awesome Arkham games, he has gotten a huge increase in coverage. However, this also coincides with the internets increase in popularity of Batman, and thus his arch enemy.

In my opinion, the best recent evidence of this over use of the Joker is the Arkham Origins game, in which we could have had a new main villain and story line, but warner bros felt that we needed another joker based (or at least a major antagonist), 'im **** things up because i can' storyline after the two superior rocksteady games, thats why I have high hopes for Arkham Knight

"So... I see you received the free ticket I sent you. I'm glad. I did so want you to be here. You see it doesn't matter if you catch me and send me back to the asylum... Gordon's been driven mad. I've proved my point. I've demonstrated there's no difference between me and everyone else! All it takes is one bad day to reduce the sanest man alive to lunacy. That's how far the world is from where I am. Just one bad day. You had a bad day once, am I right? I know I am. I can tell. You had a bad day and everything changed. Why else would you dress up as a flying rat? You had a bad day, and it drove you as crazy as everybody else... Only you won't admit it! You have to keep pretending that life makes sense, that there's some point to all this struggling! God you make me want to puke. I mean, what is it with you? What made you what you are? Girlfriend killed by the mob, maybe? Brother carved up by some mugger? Something like that, I bet. Something like that... Something like that happened to me, you know. I... I'm not exactly sure what it was. Sometimes I remember it one way, sometimes another... If I'm going to have a past, I prefer it to be multiple choice! Ha ha ha! But my point is... My point is, I went crazy. When I saw what a black, awful joke the world was, I went crazy as a coot! I admit it! Why can't you? I mean, you're not unintelligent! You must see the reality of the situation. Do you know how many times we've come close to world war three over a flock of geese on a computer screen? Do you know what triggered the last world war? An argument over how many telegraph poles Germany owed its war debt creditors! Telegraph poles! Ha ha ha ha HA! It's all a joke! Everything anybody ever valued or struggled for... it's all a monstrous, demented gag! So why can't you see the funny side? Why aren't you laughing?" - Joker 'The Killing Joke'

Crazy and insane are actually legal terms. To be either the person cannot be able to understand that the actions they have taken are wrong. The Joker is perfectly sane since he knows very well that what he is doing is evil. He is however, a psychopath. The closest diagnosis of his "condition" would be antisocial personality disorder, along with schizophrenia.

Joker's backstory never fully being revealed is why he's one my favorites, you don't need to know it for him to be chaotic and utterly insane.

The new 52, Joker lets "Dollmaker" skin his face off then he steals it back from the Gotham police.

Its pretty good, I picked up the first three because of a cosplay I saw of him.

I don't know exactly but he peeled off his face and then left Gotham for a year.
When he came back he collected his face to wear it as a mask i think.

Sounds like something he'd do, need more context though, I shall research.

>a villain who is evil for the sake of being evil/LOL SO CRAZY XD
>one of the best, if not the best

That's wrong though. Villains who were right about the world and make the 'hero' rethink his life by only talking to them is the best.

At the end of the Killing Joke, however, The Joker states, "Sometimes I remember it one way, sometimes another. If I'm going to have a past, I'd prefer it to be multiple choice." As a result, the canon of the story is left expressly in doubt and may not be true.
User avatar #49 to #47 - guardianatreyu (06/03/2014) [-]
Don't really matter now with the reboot.
User avatar #61 to #47 - makomirocket [OP](06/03/2014) [-]
did you even read the content?
User avatar #63 to #61 - lyiat ONLINE (06/03/2014) [-]
Yeah, and the part where it says, "The most accepted background" is completely false, because everyone who actually read the entire comic knows that the Joker said himself that it likely wasn't sure.
User avatar #65 to #63 - makomirocket [OP](06/03/2014) [-]
While he did, and i even put the speech bubbles that he says he doesn't know in the comics into the post, nearly every batman related media uses this back story if they need one due to the others having him already start as a kingpin and thus his transformation is merely going insane rather than also becoming a serial killer criminal from a simple "normal" life. Him also struggling to make a living before becoming the joker is just another factor that contradicts Bruce's origins
User avatar #66 to #65 - lyiat ONLINE (06/03/2014) [-]
If by "every Batman related media" you mean a whopping total of two movies that touched on the subject, sure, they draw minor parallels to the Killing Joke. Barring the fact that they existed before the Killing Joke came out, and the Killing Joke is actually referencing them and older 'possible' origins of the Joker.
User avatar #67 to #66 - makomirocket [OP](06/03/2014) [-]
"Tim Burton claimed that The Killing Joke was a major influence on his film adaptation of Batman"
"Director Christopher Nolan has mentioned that The Killing Joke served as an influence for the version of the Joker that appeared in The Dark Knight." (The two movies)
"During the interview tapes in Batman: Arkham City, Joker tells Hugo Strange his 'Origin Story', which was based on The Killing Joke."
"In Batman: Arkham Origins, during Dr. Harleen Quinzel's patient interview with the Joker midway through the game, the flashbacks accompanying the Joker's story to Quinzel are based on his past from The Killing Joke" (Two games)

I get that they are possible origins and that we will never know the TRUE origins of the joker, however, in mediums that are trying to avoid the endless canon that batman comic books have produced for almost 75 years, its a simpler and easier route for them to just choose an origin story and loosely refer to it, while keeping the mystery. Most people accept it, but not everyone, and we accept what we've got and move on
User avatar #68 to #67 - lyiat ONLINE (06/03/2014) [-]
"Detective Comics #168 (February 1951) revealed that he had been a criminal known as the Red Hood. In the story, the Red Hood falls into a vat of chemicals while escaping from Batman. He emerges with white skin, green hair, and a bizarre grin. "

Killing Joke took that idea from Detective Comics. That's the true origin of that story. While Alan Moore did a brilliant job with that comic and add color to that particular background, it's not a canon story. And saying that it's accepted as the canon background by anyone is a very big misnomer, as the Joker himself pointedly admits.
