Most people can't afford not to if they want to go into higher education.
#49 to #36 - Azz (07/03/2015) [-]
There are plenty of scholarships that go unclaimed, even for whites.

If you're going to a school where you'll come out with $100k debt and you aren't planning on being a doctor or some other high caliber profession, that's your own fault.
#63 to #49 - slyblade ONLINE (07/03/2015) [-]
Firstly thats not how it works.

Secondly there are very few scholarships for whites. And even fewer that don't rely on straight A grades which if you're getting you'll probably have a job that makes the debt you avoided redundant anyway.

Thirdly even basic jobs require degree's now a days to go into any semi specialist field you either (or both) need contacts or a degree, assuming you don't want to spend your life working in mcdonalds. etc.

Also who said anything about $100k? personally when I leave Uni I'll be in £30k debt.
And on a final note most scholarships aren't available to most people.
#65 to #63 - Azz (07/03/2015) [-]
I'm talking the United States here.

$2.9 billion went unclaimed in 2014 and nearly half of graduating high school students didn't fill out the FAFSA for free money. Last time I checked Pell Grants and other gov scholarships/grants weren't exclusive on skin color.

There are many scholarships open to all students.

So if you don't go into a specialist field you'll end up at McDonalds?

If you're taking out $100k in loans to get a women's studies degree or a degree that won't get you a job at all from a top university, that's your own fault.

Its 3am here so I may be missing something - if so, my apologies.
#66 to #65 - slyblade ONLINE (07/03/2015) [-]
My information on Scholarships in Amercia may be outdated, most of my knowledge is for the UK where 90% of Scholarships won't cover the entire cost of Uni most will cover between 50-100% of course costs and that's it, no living costs without a loan which means a job is mandatory if you don't want a loan (or rich parents).

The last time I checked American grants, the ones that cover education entirely are heavily conditional or barely cover living costs such as the Pell Grant which has a maximum payout of $5775 which will no where near cover uni costs nvm living costs.

Over here any job that isn't a waiter, shop assistant or cleaner etc requires a degree, a degree has become the baseline education most jobs expect people to have.

Sorry you specifically said Doctor etc which are high end jobs and now you're giving examples of the opposite. There are plenty of in-between degrees that will allow you to pay it off eventually. But I agree I do not believe people should go to uni to take a **** degree with no prospects and expect to not walk away with a **** tonne of debt.

It's fine.

I still don't understand the whole student loan thing.
I've said it before and I'll say it again. Here all you need is at least a 3.0 weighted GPA, BOOM, a really good scholarship. Also, there's no need to go to those Universities that are like 50k a year. Join the National Guard and BOOM, paid college
#64 to #45 - Kingsly (07/03/2015) [-]
The GPA thing I could argue that some people just can't do that, but if you actually can't get a 3.0 college probably isn't the place to be.
Joining the military has physical and mental restrictions that some individuals can't meet no matter their attempts. Not talking about things like weight or fitness, if you really want that **** you can work on it, but you can't just try really hard and become un-paralyzed.

After all of this though I'll say that my debt is my problem, if I really wanted to avoid student loans I could have went to a much cheaper school.

Stop being lazy and write the essays for scholarship applications. Holy **** I saw so many people go into debt with loans because "I don't want to write essays."

User avatar #50 to #48 - unoriginalaccount (07/03/2015) [-]
Seriously. People here like to complain about "the broken college system in the United States" but it's like mother ******* are trying to get into an ivy league university on student loans when they're too lazy to get scholarships or passed up good scholarships at community colleges because about name recognition.
People will be bragging about their prestigious degree from a prestigious school while unemployed and in debt while I'll be here with no job but at least I won't have debt and **** credit
#51 to #50 - Azz (07/03/2015) [-]
**************** .

$2.9 billion unclaimed in 2014.

If I was an employer, I'd higher someone with no debt from a second tier college than a load of debt from a top tier. They know how to manage themselves well enough to come out with a degree and no debt.

Why would I hire someone who couldn't even manage their own life when it was simple? Because they have loans to pay off?

Gee. I wonder why.
User avatar #52 to #51 - unoriginalaccount (07/03/2015) [-]
"Says here you were an average student a school with name recognition and have massive student debt. I'm not going to hire you because you obviously don't know how to manage your finances and I can trust you. Instead I'll hire this above average guy with no debt from some school I've never heard of cause he knows whats up"
That's what I would say at least
#54 to #52 - Azz (07/03/2015) [-]
I went to a second tier uni that cost about $13,000/year for four years, including summer semesters, so $52,000 total. At graduation, I had paid a total of about $11,500 out of pocket. That means, living at home, I basically had to make less than $3,000/year to afford school. No debt and I currently have 4 digits (which still isn't much) in my bank account 2 months after graduating.

I'm a white male (no ******* special scholarships just for me) that did well in school and took the time to write essays. But I'm "lucky" to be debt free. Rightttttttttttttttt...
User avatar #55 to #54 - unoriginalaccount (07/03/2015) [-]
That's some good **** man. Those people who say you're lucky to be debt free are probably the same people who go around telling people who work out 2 hours a day 6 times a week that they're genetically blessed for being fit

Economics dude. The cost of education has risen dramatically in the last 50 years. Debt is and tuition is jack **** through the roof, and basically these days unless you are rich with super Asian scores and master of all trades you ain't getting into ivy league for jack a **** . So is cost of living and inflation. Things are bad. Like really bad.

It's not like other countries with free healthcare, vacation, programs, and free education.
America is a fight to death and endless competition

Personally I say **** all that. Seriously, **** it. I'm not going to compete when I'm just going to lose. I'll play smart. I'm in college right now and basically just going to wherever I can to eventually get my bachelors in economics. After that I'll see if I can land a job working for the government, get a GS 7 or so job and work my way up. Nice and cozy, good pay, mobility good benefits.

I also plan to invest in real estate and start my own businesses.
But man, ***** hard in America.

I went to a pharmacy school for 3 years. Worst decision of my life. Everyone suggested it to me because I liked chemistry in high school, and they were full of **** because pharmacy school is 95% biology, and I hate biology.

Anyways, poor study habits lead me to not make it in that school. Neck deep in college loans already I came back home and started working a dead end job just trying to keep my credit from taking a complete **** . 6 Months later I couldn't take it anymore, luckily one of my coworkers joined the army, so that got my thinking. I ended up going to an Air Force recruiter, and I've now been in the USAF for the past 3 and a half years. If I could go back in time I would tell everyone in my high school to go **** themselves and enlisted straight after graduating. Could've probably been a TSgt by now.

The only benefits I see out of the years I've wasted is personal experience of how much I hate civilian life, and some very good friends.

I feel you brah. It just bothers me that there's all these simple solutions but people still complain. I use simple in the sense that it's simple to find it but not always to achieve it but it's always worth it in the end.
I can't even get scholarships because of my immigration status but I'm still smart enough to go to an affordable college that most people can into for at least 60% paid for solely off scholarships so I won't need student loans. It just pisses me off that people have these opportunities that I don't and then don't take them and go off complaining about the opportunities they didn't take.
I guess they'll do them and I'll do me and I really shouldn't worry about them

It makes no sense that in this day and age we have exactly one way to prove mastery of a particular area of study.

In a world where we have an unprecedented access to information, why should you spend tens of thousands of dollars to learn something when you could learn it for free.

But no, we've decided that the only way to prove your mastery is to spend tens of thousands of dollars to get a piece of paper.

There has to be a better way.

I don't understand, when people take these loans, don't they know how much it will cost when they loan the money? Aren't there anyone advising them, or if not, aren't they able to use common sense to realize that they have to pay back the loan, plus interest?

When you take out a loan, you should have a very clear idea of how much you need to pay back and have a realistic idea of how you are going to pay it back.

I just read all these people complaining about their debt and I get that, that is an insane amount of money to get and education, but didn't they understood that before they took the loan, or did the rules changed after they took the loan?

I get that you have to have an education, but if getting one requires you to pay off the dept till you are about to retire, I am really wondering if it is worth it.

I considered becoming a pilot, until I found out how much it would cost, how much money I needed to borrow because I don't have anyone who can pay for it, and I wouldn't be able to pay of that dept before I was old, unless I moved to Japan, since pilots there make a whole lot of more money than were I am from.
