As someone with photophobia, I just can't go outside my house without wearing sunglasses. As a matter of fact, it's worse when it's cloudy because clouds make the sky brighter and it hurts my eyes badlier than if it was just plain sunny and I can't just use my hand to protect my eyes from the sun.

The funny thing is, a regular ballpoint would have worked just fine.
#45 to #26 - anon (01/06/2016) [-]
Ever tried picking up a ballpoint that doesn't work at first? That's cuz the ink isn't touching the ball yet, and that's cuz gravity has pulled the ink in another direction. And you need gravity to pull it back to the ball.
#68 to #45 - anon (01/06/2016) [-]
And what happens when there is no gravity to pull the ink away from the ball in the first place?

Did you forget about the whole no-gravity thing?
User avatar #109 to #82 - faganon (01/06/2016) [-]
There IS gravity, but 0 G-force. You're orbiting an object i.e. Earth, Moon whatever at such high speeds that you just float, like how if you throw a baseball it seems to float and travel straight before losing speed and falling due to air resistance and gravity. However in space, there is no air resistance, and you travel faster than gravity can pull you down.
User avatar #142 to #109 - redrex ONLINE (01/06/2016) [-]
The pen, ballpoint, and ink would also be moving this fast, and therefore floating around. so there is effectively no gravity.
User avatar #38 to #26 - thediamondhack (01/06/2016) [-]
sure, but not in space
#71 to #38 - anon (01/06/2016) [-]
In fact it works fine in space.

plz, stop your ******** .
you know very well it doesnt work in space

"Because of a ballpoint pen's reliance on gravity to coat the ball with ink, most cannot be used to write upside-down."
#61 to #60 - anon (01/06/2016) [-]
Cannot be used to write upside down because gravity pulls the ink away. Now this may be news to you, however, there is no gravity in space. Nothing to pull the ink away, surface tension keeps the ink running.
User avatar #62 to #61 - listerthepessimist (01/06/2016) [-]
I take it you're not familiar with microgravity?
#64 to #62 - anon (01/06/2016) [-]
I take it you're not familiar with surface tension.
User avatar #65 to #64 - listerthepessimist (01/06/2016) [-]
very familiar, now please don't dodge the question.
are you familiar with microgravity, or do you stand by your statement that there is no gravity in space?
#67 to #65 - anon (01/06/2016) [-]
Ugh there is gravity in space although minute as it is one of the weakest forces in the universe, but as Newton pointed out all things gravitate towards everything else. So the astronauts gravitate towards the space station and vice versa, you can never truly be in zero gravity. But that's not the point, it has no effect on the ballpoint pen's ability to operate.
User avatar #74 to #67 - listerthepessimist (01/06/2016) [-]
except it does.

while you are correct that true zero G conditions are practically impossible, you may be surprised to find that the ISS experiences 80% of earth gravity, but since the ISS, our hypothetical pen and the hypothetical ink inside it are in a state of constant freefall, there is no force to push the ink to the ball, unless pistons/compressed air are used as I'm sure you know, while everything gravitates to everything else, the mass of the ink or ball are so small as to be utterly negligible.

but since you found a picture of water behaving like water would in the quasi-ZG environment, you'll also be able to find one of a standard ballpoint pen writing in those conditions too.

Sure Anon, because they totally didn't bother testing normal ballpoints first.
#106 to #37 - anon (01/06/2016) [-]
They actually didn't, they thought it might pose a problem and aimed to fix it before it showed up. However the funding for the project was private and not by taxes/government/nasa. The pen that was developed had other advantages though like three times the lifetime of a regular pen.

>Some guy said it on TV
>Must be true

I'm going to assume you are neither an engineer nor have a grasp on simple physics.

I will explain to you some of the reasons why you can't use ballpoints in space.

1. The less ink contained in the pen, the less effective it is for writing; There is no force pushing the ink down onto the tip. Simply getting more pens is not a solution since they are too heavy. Space pens are refillable, making the total weight much lighter.

2. Ballpoints have a lifespan of around 2 years. This makes them unsuitable for space exploration.

3. Ballpoints cannot write on grease or any low friction surface.

4. Ballpoints have a very narrow temperature threshold.

5. Ballpoints are fragile and can break easily.

6. Ballpoint ink has an unpleasant odour which is problematic since smells cannot be ventilated in spacecraft.

Since Stephen Fry's degree in English literature does not qualify him to suggest solutions to highly complex problems he should leave it to the ones with an actual education people working in the STEM field.

But if you want, I can still come around later...
#29 to #26 - anon (01/06/2016) [-]

But we anons are never taken seriously, Because the "Manly" men that "dare" log in and show how cool they are by having an account is always right.

It is not like we all are anonymous anyway...
#112 to #99 - anon (01/06/2016) [-]
I went anon because I didn't want to make it look like I was doing it for thumbs, up or down, I'm just trying to teach people by debunking a popular myth. Some people on here seem to be just as bad as Tumblrinas, they can't handle when something they thought was right is proven wrong. So they dig their heels in and start to throw a tantrum trying to scream and drown out the truth.

I am an anon because as a user, I'm flesh and blood, I can be ignored, I can be destroyed; but as anon... as anon I can be incorruptible, I can be everlasting. Like a fart in an elevator, spreading the stink of truth into the nostrils of the misinformed. Breath deep children, for school has begun!

While the coma story is most likely ******** I dont find it hard to believe that in between physical therapy the guy found time to get to a laptop or something, also it's not like he said "first thing I did was get on the computer" so we dont know how long it was between him getting up and getting the initial test and **** done and him actually getting on a computer and while he probably did atrophy it's not impossible that it wouldnt be so bad that it would prevent him from typing albeit slowly, again story is probably ******** but not impossible.

About the pen or the guy working out? The pen one was about how normal pens didn't work in space, so NASA made a really high tech pen that did, and people on the internet were saying "hurr durr russia just used a pencil xddd" except pencils didn't just now work either, it was incredibly dangerous because the pencil **** got in the air and killed people.
