common misconception, a panda is not a bear, it is more closely related to the Racoon family.

a red panda is in fact a species of small, long tailed bear. The red panda looks like a raccoon but its a bear and the giant panda looks like a bear but its a giant raccoon. nature wtf?

Common misconception. The Giant Panda (the one most people call a "Panda") is completely unrelated to the Red Panda, which is the one that is closely related to Racoons. The Giant Panda is actually in the Ursadae family, which means it's a bear. It's much more closely related to a bear than a raccoon.

Scientists have debated whether giant pandas should be placed with bears, racoons, or in their own group. But by examining their DNA, it's looking that giant pandas are closer to bears. As it stands, their current taxonomic classification is indeed within the Ursidae (bear) family. Though, admittedly, the giant panda's ancestors did form their own branch at an earlier date than the ancestors of other species of bear; within the Ursidae family, giant pandas are the only extant member of their genus (Ailuropoda). This is oppsed to the larger Ursus genus, which includes the black, brown, and polar bear species/sub-species.
Meanwhile the red panda, which is more distantly related to the giant pandas, has been placed in its own family, Ailuridae.
