I always thought it was because of what Fury said to Cap in the gym: "Ten bucks says you're wrong" to Cap saying: "At this point I don't think anything would surprise me" (The huge flying carrier being that anything).

Fun Fact: in the written series he punched out Fury because when he was unfrozen he told him that there were no GENERAL negros and that the highest (i think he said) was a colonel, he then proceeded to jump out of the hospital window on the 4th floor

Ultimate universe.
That's just basically grimdark for marvel.

I never got into the Ultimate Universe and almost everything I've heard about it makes me not want to.

It started ok. Especially Spider man. But it went downhill fast.

Yeah, they gave a guy who just lost his son, and was half mad from grief complete control over Ultimate Marvel.
So he completely changed the characters into assholes and killed off 2/3 of the characters.

but wasn't that only in the Ultimate series? (which are/can be a touchy subject among some marvel fans)

I'm pretty sure, Furry is black in Ultimate, not the regular series.

Which is why the ending scene always bothered me. At the end of Captain America, you see some black kids and some white kids playing ball in the middle of the street in New York. NO ONE would have allowed that to happen, especially with that many white people around.

Actually that would be later, in the sixties. In the forties, especially in poorer areas kids would often play together.
You wouldn't allow your kid to bring a black kid home, but they could play together in the street. As long as black kid doesn't get any ideas.
Even in antebellum south white and black kids would play together. Then slowly separated by custom and station as they grew up.
Strict separation was developed in the fifties and sixties as whites started to think blacks are acting above their station.
