I never respond to anyone who thumbs me down. I thumbed down one comment a couple weeks ago, literally just one in the past couple weeks, and the guy sent me a hateful message. Then thumbed down all my recent comments.

It didn't really bother me, but it was creepy to learn that some people pay that close of attention to who is thumbing them.

No one ever reacts to the good thumbs I've given. But the odd bad thumb I give gets a response. I am sure there is a psychological principle at work here, but I am tired/dumb.

It's a ******* thumb, calm your **** .
Your applying way to much power to it than there needs to be.
Yes, we use these thumbs to judge, but come on, what you're saying is over the top.

You did it for a "greater good"? Maybe if it helped solve an actual problem. O.o

I haven't been on here very long, but I get the feeling people take these 'thumbs' way more serious than they should.

Someone once thumped me down, because i made a huge mistake in understanding the point of something because i compared german and english with each other. Result: i totally missed the context. But as extra he gave me an comment WHAT i have made wrong without calling me an stupid dick. I replied thankfully and gave him a thump and deleted my other stupid comment after realizing, how stupid my comment actually is! www.funnyjunk.com/funny_pictures/4685013/Facts+about+The+Simpsons/148#148

Because no one wants to be that first asshole to thumb something down.
If something's not too flat out stupid we'll just leave it be. Seeing something thumbed down already does invoke the natural mob mentality.
Call them sheeple but it's just basic psychology.

don't care much for thumbs up/downs(they have no real value) it's pretty much the same thing as the like button on facebook. The only time I thumbdown is if someone is trolling/spaming or put a pic/gif of porn on **** ...

i remember once i got thumbed down for mentioning being a vegetarian and got banned i know what you're think but i was not forcing my opinions on people or attack meateaters, just mentioned because we we were taling about a resturant i think alot of it went like your experiment.
at first it was proberly people who actauly disliked my comment but after the first 20 downtvotes or something people just decided to "go with the flow".

i think that someone could have said something about any subject and if it had enough negative or positive thumbs people with go with it, it's proberly the same thing that drives kids in classes to change themself in order to fit in
