Why would he lower the pistol? that can kill a man just as dead just as quick as the AK...

AK burst is guaranteed death whereas you will only get away with 1-2 pistol shots before being knocked down. If you are not a trained marksman In that circumstance its best to avoid a firefight altogether and surrender.

That and the sheer intimidation factor of having a machine gun pointed at you would make you back off.

Except that the first shot might not kill, meaning you have the pull the trigger again. The AK guy just has to hold the trigger.
