the Hobbit is a classic, if you haven't read it then you deserve to have the film spoiled.

Also, on a timeline, The Hobbit takes place before LOTF, and Bilbo is alive for LOTF. Logical reasoning..

just watching Fellowship of the ring will technically spoil the hobbit, since you know bilbo's in it as an old git

I'm stuck on a fence of hypocrisy, where I agree that it's silly for people to call 'Spoilers!!' on an old film/book/game but at the same time am very bothered when the very same things are spoiled for me.
Case in point, when my girlfriend spoiled a movie like this:
"Hey, you know that movie where *eye widening plot devices*? What was it called again?
Oh, yeah; Fight Club!"

Did he outlive him and live longer than Smaug or just outlive him? I mean, was Smaug older than Bilbo? I can't recall how old it said he was, I always got the feeling he was ancient and that Bilbo was like one hundred and something years old? I'm not trying to be a wise ass it's just been ages since I got to read the books and I forget....

To outlive can mean both to live longer than or to live past than, so it is correct.
