"You know, smoking's bad for you."

"This? My grandmother smoked and lived to be 100 years old!"

"By smoking?"

"Minding her own damn business! Mr. EEE-glesias with a 'I'!

anyone know the difference between cigarettes and cigars? stupid question i know but id like to know, thanks
#171 to #168 - cosmicapprentice ONLINE (10/31/2013) [-]
Cigarettes are your average smokes in packages that you can buy at any convenience store or liquor store. Cigars are these ones from the pick.

Thanks for the reply but I was wondering more about what exactly is inside them that differentiates the two. Thanks again

Well I'm not really a cigar smoker, I've smoke cheap cigars and little cigars, the main difference is that cigarettes have toasted/baked crushed tobacco leafs along with additives and stuff, while cigars are whole tobacco leafs rolled in layers, and you don't inhale the smoke, you just taste it and then let it go.

I think smoking is cool and fun, but I'm to much of a ***** to do it everyday, maybe a few times a week.
User avatar #172 to #145 - cosmicapprentice ONLINE (10/31/2013) [-]
Although my opinion isn't the same as yours, I do it because I enjoy it, yes sometimes I do it just to be in atmosphere with the ones around me, so they don't feel alone when smoking their own cigarettes. I used to smoke everyday and buy one or two packs every two days, now I quit not because of my health or because I want to, but because I can't afford them anymore and I don't really feel like taking my mom's cigarettes.

Nicotine does nothing for me, I used to chew a lot of tobacco. About 1 pack a day worth of it, and was able to quit no problem, and apparently snuff is more addictive than cigarettes.
User avatar #167 to #156 - sixfivefourtwoone ONLINE (10/31/2013) [-]
It's not that Nicotine does nothing for you, it's that you don't notice it. You're not immune to it, it's just slower for you than others.
User avatar #169 to #167 - FairyGodParents (10/31/2013) [-]
My buddy's always talk about the 'nicotine buzz' they got when they started chewing and when they have a smoke. I never really get the buzz, I like to do it, but if I try for a buzz I usually have to do a lot and I feel light headed for a couple seconds then just get sick. I guess being light headed is part of the buzz, but getting sick is a good way to try and quit. Every time I would get a nictoine overdose on a certain flavour of chew I would have a very hard time chewing it again later. Maybe I'm just easily conditioned, who knows.

Being a soldier in the Canadian army, I can say that cigs help us out a lot. They help get the stress off of our mind y'know? I know its a bad habit, and I respect non smokers, and all that **** . But at the end of the day, Im glad I have them.
User avatar #122 - roflcopterskklol (10/31/2013) [-]
Just saying smoking does not cause cancer it causes ********* cancer.

If you get cancer, you were going to get it NO MATTER WHAT
If you smoked it may have helped contribute but it was not the cause.

I mean if we wanted to look at it statistically
1 in 3 people get cancer
1 in 3 smokers get cancer
2 in 3 people never get cancer
2 in 3 smokers never get cancer
And cancer rates are rising because those who have defective genes that cause cancer are breeding with those who do not.

Genetics and **** .
User avatar #166 to #122 - nighkey (10/31/2013) [-]
There are many forms of cancer. For example, your bone marrow creates red blood cells. If the marrow suddenly starts making the blood sells that do not function (sickle cells) than you will start to feel effects of being low on oxygen (anemic in this case.) This is a form of leukemia/bone cancer, by the way, for reference.

The only source of the cancer here is the body part not functioning as intended. There are other ways of this happening in various locations of the anatomy beyond being born that way.

Genetics play a huge part, and it sucks that people who survive cancer go on to breed and increase the odds of more people in the future having to fight the same battle. (This actually infuriates me.) However, there are other methods (sun, radiation, exposure to chemicals) that can damage tissues and force them to perform irregularly. Smoking is one of those things.
#155 to #122 - playerdous (10/31/2013) [-]
********* cancer is cancer. If you damage a cell and it reproduces out of control that's cancer. Smoking damages the cells in a slew of different places (reference pic). You weren't always going to get lung cancer, but you smoked so you damaged your lungs. What I think you're arguing is about the people that have genetic Immunity to certain types of " ********* cancer" such as the 93 year old smoker with normal lungs.
User avatar #126 to #122 - ambiguous **User deleted account** (10/31/2013) [-]
I think it increases the risk for lung cancer. Not general cancer. Even if it doesn't, it is still very unhealthy.
User avatar #127 to #126 - roflcopterskklol (10/31/2013) [-]
May be unhealthy but it is not what causes cancer.

Increasing the risk is just another way of saying "You were going to get it anyway but you have it sooner rather than later"
User avatar #129 to #127 - ambiguous **User deleted account** (10/31/2013) [-]
You do understand that there are external causes for cancer, right? It's not solely genetics.
User avatar #131 to #129 - roflcopterskklol (10/31/2013) [-]
Like skin cancer right?
UV radiation yeah?

Wont get skin cancer if you do not have the gene that causes it.
Read some recent studies in genetics and cancer, in the past 5 years a lot has been discovered.

Most cancers are not related to genetics.
User avatar #136 to #133 - roflcopterskklol (10/31/2013) [-]
I can link things that support my argument from google too..
There is that much contradictory evidence on both sides, the side that says it is genetic is the one with more evidence in my opinion.

Hang on. Maybe I'm not fully understanding your view.

Cancer is genetic. It is caused by genetic mutations. However, those mutations can be caused by a variety of things including being inherited. Anyone could contract skin cancer. It depends on whether mutated genes mutate, survive, and spread.

I smoke cigarettes, but I like to think I'm pretty courteous about it. If I'm out with friends, I'll ask if they mind if I smoke, and I never blow it in their faces. When I'm on a bench and someone's walking by, I always hold it in and exhale after they pass.
also: cigarettes

That is nice of you to be polite.

As a non smoker, I HATE when anyone (especially close friends) ask if they can smoke in my car. It's very hard to say no, then I end up sitting there gritting my teeth the whole time. "But the window's open!" Oh piss off, it doesn't all magically go out the window.

That aside I try to accommodate or plan for my friend's visits by making some areas of the house, or outside of it in front of the garden with a great view, designated smoking spots. Either way, I hate when they ask that question. =/
User avatar #103 - volteez (10/31/2013) [-]
i'd rather smoke hookah pens than anything else. it's pretty fun to learn how to do tricks, it isn't addictive (it depends on what you get, some have insane amounts of nicotine), and they are flavored. when you think about it, it's way better than doing tobacco or weed
User avatar #99 - nuful (10/31/2013) [-]
i believe that if you smoke, the government shouldn't have to pay if you get cancer.
User avatar #109 to #99 - Dwarf (10/31/2013) [-]

User avatar #110 to #109 - nuful (10/31/2013) [-]
i know, that is why i believe tax money shouldn't be wasted on such people.
User avatar #123 to #110 - roflcopterskklol (10/31/2013) [-]
Smokers pay more tax than most people... if anything you should not get medical treatment for the surplus they put into the economy from their bad habits.

Not a smoker just saying they can support their own medical costs with the tax they pay just from smoking.
User avatar #134 to #123 - nuful (10/31/2013) [-]
i honestly don't give a **** because i have a private insurance. but that is besides the point.

what i try to say is that according to some ******** organization i just made up a **** ton of people (exact amount) die from lung cancer as a result of second hand smoking. so whatever you said about me not deserving medical care because i dont smoke, is plain out ******** .

the point I try to get across is that i want smokers to die as to stop them from filling innocent people's lungs with **** , i honestly dont care about myself but i do care for the children who dont have much say in the matter.

it matters not how much money they put into the economy though taxes, for it will never account for the suffering of even a single child.

ps: i am, as a matter of fact, butt hurt
User avatar #135 to #134 - roflcopterskklol (10/31/2013) [-]
Since when has second hand smoke been killing people?
I mean it was but not anymore...

You are not even allowed to smoke in an out door eating area, or even a bar/pub anymore.

Also, if there is somewhere where a lot of people are smoking, i do not go over there and say " ******* filthy smokers **** off" i just avoid that area because i am not part of that minority.

You should do the same.

During high school I had to do volunteer work at a hospital and was assigned to the oncology thing for kids. Oftentimes i would see kids there whose parents were smokers (as you mentioned, it was a couple of years ago when public smoking laws were more lenient) yet i couldnt help but rage a little. I had no way to know that it was the cause for the kid's illness but still there being a chance was enough for me to get a feely feel.
