Agnosticism is a part of Atheism.
That's like saying Catholic is a religion

It astounds me how often people get this **** wrong.

Atheism = don't believe in a god
Agnosticism = don't believe in any particular religion

And Catholicism is a religion.

Agnosticism can apply to Christianity as well. You can be an Agnostic Christian or a Gnostic Christian.
Personally I'm an Agnostic Atheist, but that's besides the point.
Agnostic is saying "I don't know."
Gnostic is saying "I know."

"Gnostic Christianity" might not be what you think it is. (See: Neo-Platonism.)

Also, there is no such thing as a truly agnostic Christian. You can of course claim that there are things we don't understand about Christianity, but that's not really agnosticism in the same sense, and if it is, then every reasonable human being is "agnostic" because they realize they don't know everything there is to know. "Agnosticism" is more appropriately left specifically for those who claim not to be able to know anything about a higher power yet have not firmly decided against one.

Isn't the idea of being agnostic admitting that you don't know one way or another, while Atheism is claiming to have no reason to believe in God at all?

Atheism is the lack of believe in any sort of deity, it is the position where no deity/s exist. Atheist are Skeptics towards any sort of any religious belief. the end.

theres a lot more to cover from what i said, but it was just to clarify something 1st

Buddhists are atheists. If you consider Buddhism to be a religion, then the second part of what you said is wrong.

Although it focusses on the indidual's inner path to enlightment, buddhism has an entire cosmology with higher planes and higher beings, including many deities.

In fact it shares many features with the other vedantic religions like Hinduism. (Karma, Dharma, Reincarnation e.g.)
User avatar #101 to #93 - Zefat ONLINE (04/29/2014) [-]
You are in fact correct and i'm sry, but nowadays people pray to budha as a deity (not all, some people,) even tho buddism teaches that praising a god or gods is not usefull in any way, at least to reach enlightment, it is in fact how its story and religion turns around of what "the enlightened one or even the awaken one" teached, but today those same teachings are surrounded by suprestition and myth and that is what makes most people believe that it is a theist religion, either way the atheist movement is not about the bashing and debunking religions or what religious people do wrong, its about how religion usurpes our future generations education and how it can affect them if not "treated" soon. Its just that. But the term Atheist still stands, but i will refrain that atheists are a huge aglomerate mind set to a better future, and with that, any kind of religious movement is stoping progression at least in our kids education, and if buddism is taking the same steps towards worshiping budda as a deity and not as an enlightened person it will be considered a theist religion.

That was an excellent point to pause and think thanks anon

Agnostic isn't a special group in between atheism and theism, you're either one or the other.
#5 to #1 - auryn (04/28/2014) [-]
No, not necessarily. There's agnostic atheism as well as agnostic theism.

In one sense Agnosticism is the opposite of atheism and religion, because instead of claiming to know it admits it doesn't or can't know.

atheism doesn't necessarily claim to know, it claims to not believe. Claiming to know there is no god depends on the person.

well thanks for clearing that up then.

Agnostics believe that there may, or may not be a god
Atheists believe that there definitely is not a god
The two disagree on their core beliefs, and therefore are separate, though related.

Catholicism is a sect, or subgroup, of Christianity, but that doesn't mean it isn't a religion.
Answering the question "What religion are you?" with "Catholic" instead of "Christian"
is the same as
Answering the the question "Where are you from?" with "Norway" instead of "Scandinavia"
It's just a narrower, more distinct definition.
#24 to #4 - anonymous (04/28/2014) [-]
Except that's wrong. Agnoticsim is the belief that the existence of deities cannot be proven or disproven. Atheism is the belief that there are no deities but you can still be open to the idea, believing that there definitely is no god depends on the person, not every atheist.

Atheists don't believe there's no god, they don't believe there is a god (or higher power). It's about the wording there.
#8 to #4 - minelava (04/28/2014) [-]
Actually, Agnosticism is the belief that we cannot know if there is or isn't a god.

Atheism at it's most basic definition is simply a lack of belief in a higher power.
User avatar #33 to #8 - ninjaroo ONLINE (04/28/2014) [-]
The word agnostic means "Lacking knowledge", it means you're uncertain. It can be applied to literally anything.
Atheism is as you said, at it's most basic, the lack of belief in a higher power. If you wanted to be more specific you could say you're an agnostic atheist. You don't believe in a higher power, but you're not certain about your position.
