The Wrong Opinion with Joshuaww
Warning: TL;DR Below
I have a hard time considering Skyrim a good game. I've never played Morrowind, so what I say can't be applied there, but it could also be applied to Oblivion and even Fallout to some extent (though, I think Fallout did some things better, but that's for a different discussion.)
Skyrim just is too much of a picture sort of thing. It boasts about how much you can do, and is designed around the idea of one character going through the whole game and doing every little thing. Your character is given unlimited potential, and essentially can be anything at any time. To a lot of people, this is a good fun thing, and I can respect that. However, it does not work for me.
Because the game is so designed with the idea of one character going through the world, the rest of the game is left to be rather bland and straight forward. Sure they offer some small things here and there for that one moment you want to do one strategy, but it's all just so simple and bland that playing any character that just specializes in one trick (coming mostly from an assassin's point of view), kinda stops feeling the NEED to do anything a certain way once their guild is done with.
Even in the guilds, you rarely need to be especially good at something. A warrior could go through the college with no need to change how they play at all or feel crippled by their lack of magic skills. They can just whip out their sword and five minutes later their the Archmage when all they really did magicy was that fireball for the entrance 'exam.' It makes the world feel very... well, stupid. Actually stupid and totally kills the immersion.
Now, most people could probably argue "Well, just make your one character for that guild and do it right." Yes, I could... but then the game pretty much ends at level 20.
I guess I'd just rather have one very complex and extravagant dish over a large and very bland buffet.
You might find the Elder Scrolls Online to be more to your liking then, it plays similarly but you pick a class and you stick to it. Haven't played much as the Beta was fairly short, but I enjoyed it. You should consider signing up for the Beta, testing it out for an evening might tell you if you're interested or not.
I'm not one for MMOs. I'm plenty happy with the Souls series as my go-to RPG series
I'm usually in the same camp, but this feels more like an Elder Scrolls game rather than an MMO. Regardless, won't try to force it down your throat. I still need to pick up Dark Souls, heard good things.
I'm not big on ES or MMOs so really no matter how you look at it, I'm just not very interested. The fact you can be anything in Skyrim really boils down to the bigger problem of nothing feels special, and everything needs to be pretty straight forward so that the game can have so much. Jack of all trades in action.
Dark Souls is much more focused, and that's part of what makes it so good in my opinion. It still has versatility, but they aren't all so wildly different that they'd have to be somewhat gutted in order to all fit. Plus leveling is a bit more balanced since hitting max level takes forever. It's 720something for max. Typical PvP level is agreed to be 120-125, if that gives you an idea.
But yeah, I won't shove it down your throat any more than that (just as you were kind enough to do for me), but it's really good at what it does.
I'll pick it up, always nice to get a recommendation of a solid game.
Or, if you can, wait until Dark Souls II. Comes out this March. Looking to be just a better game and maaaaaaay not be very tied to the first. Looks like it takes A LOOOOOOONG time after the first and its to the point where it'll just be... said in passing, I guess.
Up to you, but if you get the second you probably won't be lost on what's going (or, if it's as subtle as the first in terms of narration, you will be, but so will everyone else.)
Yee, that might be a good course of action. Thanks man.
I totally agree with you. Also the fact that no matter what you play, assassin, thief, warrior... You almost end up joining the College for that one reason they have planted quests there essential to to some of the other questlines.
Also no matter what, you will play as Dragonborn, even you play a character there isn't. Of course you can ignore the main quest, but it's most likely you will run into a word wall sooner or later, that reminds you, that you're character is Dragonborn.
And for the heavy roleplayers it's tough, because you almost have to know every single quest in the game, to roleplay. Because let's say you play a holy man... The game throws so many deadric quests in your face, that it's almost impossible to play a holy character and there is no way you know if it's a deadric quest.
So the game doesn't really work that well for heavy roleplayers... As many people use the words "it's been dumbed down"... It's still a good game, but that is the truth. I still play the game and enjoy it.
And I like your point, they focused to much on the character doing everything, and not being a specific character. Like the skill system even manages to be that way.
