In Majoras Mask, time is reversed again and again until the moon is stopped, and possibly moved back to the start of day 1 again after the skull kid was defeated.
Link never realised that he had saved people, and lived his life not knowing that time was just reset after he saved everyone. It is from those regrets of never saving anyone (despite the fact he did but just cant remember) that turned him into the shade.
