why do American airports not allow you to take a bottle of water on to the plane, but then on the plane you have the option to get another one?

because what they give you is in fact water
what you take on the plane may look like water but may really be an AK47

All combustible liquids can freeze. In-fact everything can freeze. It is just a matter of finding the freezing point.

Yes, but if you have a bottle of water, they test it to make sure its just water.
After they make sure its just water, and nothing else, they'll still make a show of throwing it out.

Nitroglycerin will also explode from bumping it a little too roughly. If you think someone could bring that through a busy airport in a water bottle, I'd recommend checking your facts.

Like someone else said security, because of liquid explosives, and what they have beyond security has been checked I'd assume. I just wanted to also add that in the US as long as you buy the water after security, like in the gate area you can buy water and bring it on the plane. Flying internationally though, in Dubai you have another security just to get to your gate, and there they make you throw away any water you got even past the first security. To fly to the US in Dubai you go through security 3 different times, one to get to where you check in before you even get your boarding pass, one right after that, and then one at the gate.

tl;dr Security in the US can be lenient compared to other places.

Another thing I forgot to add, in the check in area they sell water, and if you make the mistake of buying it there you have to throw it away pretty much immediately as the next security is right after where they're selling water.

It makes perfect sense if you understood it. Lets say you buy the water and we let you through and everyone behind you sees and starts filing formal complaints, we don't want that, rules have to apply to everyone at all times, we cant just decide to do our own thing for any of our processes. Yesterday we made a guy check in a huge snow globe because it obviously contained far more then the allowed amount of water.

Scientific Explanation:

while wikipedia has a lot of theories on thermodynamics and convection, i think the best explanation is due to the stability of the lattice that forms of the hydrogen bonds of the water molecules' interactions in the solid state
--i.e. because the liquid form is more mobile it is more likely to get in the perfect/ideal bulk hydrogen bonding formation and thus more tightly bound

this also would explain why hot water freezes faster than cold - more energy and more likely to reach that ideal lattice structure

i see how this makes sense but what if you boil the air out then freeze it would its density be the same?

Yes the liquid form would still be more dense. The reason is because when water freezes the water molecules align in such a way that they basically expand the volume they take up compared to when they are less ordered in liquid form.

ahhhh like an inefficiently stacked tower, stacked with blocks aligned in such away that it takes up more space rather than an efficient tetris style taking up as little space as possible

Yeah pretty much. Its an extremely unique property of water.

To add on to his point, water reaches maximum density at 4 degrees Celsius. This property only belongs to water and a huge part of it being a life giving inorganic substance.

Yeah water really is kind of a miracle molecule. If it wasn't polar and wasn't extremely unique in that it was less dense as a solid then life on earth might not have been possible.

Ya we went over it in Bio last week, this whole overview on water, dehydration synthesis, and hydrolysis and why it keeps us alive.

It is a valid question, that is why ice float but no on really thinks about it until you see why it happens.

That's why water expands when it freezes
