As per normal I was browsing my Facebook feed for cringe worthy crap when I came along this little gem. I normally don't care about white privilege posts, but I thought this was to ridiculous to not share. American schools teach American history, not African history. (And besides, don't African-Americans technically have the same history as White Americans? I understand the class difference in the past but this is the same country they come from after all.)

White guys, some asians, and some middle eastern gentlemen invents everything.
Black guy invents peanut butter... or did he?
User avatar #16 to #9 - potatorgue (11/03/2015) [-]
if i recall correctly he didn't even invent peanut butter, he just thought of a bunch of ways to theoretically use peanuts, possibly including peanut butter

Christ, I remember what a huge ******* deal they made out of that **** in elementary school. I was still new to the country at the time, so when they started going all gay over it I was like "who the **** even cares? why are we devoting a whole month to this"

needless to say it didnt go over well

>British
There's your problem, m8.
If you lived in the land of the free, you'd have something to talk about.

I'm American and we were taught the history of Asia, Africa, middle east etc. as a core subject in high school as well. It was for our second year of high school.

In america, if you believe this, you don't understand the concept of america.
Your history is american history. I hail from poland, russia, germany, canada, and sweden. None of these countries histories are mine, just US history. And white men made most of our history. If you want to learn about spear chuckers, then you take an elective. Want to know about hussars? Elective. It is required to know where the COUNTRY YOU LIVE IN comes from, not the place so ****** your ancestors left.

(But my family comes from slaves) neat. You arent a slave now, so get over it. You are not only in a wealthy country, but are a citizen in this country. Nice toss of the dice.

(But thats racist) not a real thing. Thank Trotsky for that term Ok fine, What history does any other country have (let alone you people) have? And does it have absolutely anything to do with a 200 year old country?

(Ya we was kings and **** and you made us slaves) First off, untrue. West Africans sold west Africans to anyone who would buy them. Second, you weren't kings at all. sub-Saharan Africans have never held an empire or been kings. (this includes Egypt. dont believe me, then do some ******* research. Egypt (as it is now) is middle eastern, not black.

So i ask you, what is this fabled PoC history that warrants a single second of study?

I'd like to learn about Hussars...
User avatar #17 to #11 - elsenortamatoe (11/03/2015) [-]
evil invaders took over our land and raped and killed our people. The hussars, knowing that god would not allow them to fail, destroyed the invaders and drove them out.

Look at the size of these "empires" they arent empires. They also fell apart when the leaders died.
#25 to #15 - dynomarx (11/03/2015) [-]
That Songhai empire is nearly the size of Western Europe.
User avatar #32 to #25 - elsenortamatoe (11/03/2015) [-]
Arabs and Muslims were the leaders of most empires in Africa, including the Songhai empire. It fell to a smaller, more advanced Muslim army after the first major ruler died.

White privilege is being taught the history of the Majority population of the country you're inhabiting , because obviously everyone in Africa is taught European history without glorifying their own 10 thousand year long dark-ages.
User avatar #27 to #4 - falloutfanatic (11/03/2015) [-]
saying an age is however many years long sounds like you're saying it was different before... africa is in a dark age, always was in a dark age, and honestly i think it always will be

If you want a serious response, continue reading. If not, pass on it.

White American history isn't the same as African American history. Their experiences weren't the same as other Americans. They weren't considered American either, same with the native Americans. Its about racemaking and a lot of insanely liberal sounding **** . So no, "our" history isn't the same as theirs. Experience matters, and thanks to its invention by Europeans, race now does too.
User avatar #28 to #22 - fatminion ONLINE (11/03/2015) [-]
uh, after 1820 or whatever it was. There is no "White American History" course as far as I know. There's just "American History" which starts with Roanoke, Jamestown, talks about Injuns 'n sutch, then moves on to the revolution, then slavetrade, civil war, industrial revolution, freeing of slaves, WWI, Prohibition/Great Depression, WWII, Baby-Boomers, hippie times, dark '80s and the stock market boom and crash, tech boom of the '90s and then whatever it is we have today. Millenialism or whatever.

Some courses might only focus on a small aspect of the general US history, especially in university, but that's it. Of course slave trade and blacks in general get talked about a lot in certain parts. And after the civil rights movement in the '60s, they were considered equals, so the whole race issue is simply not mentioned again - well, maybe now it might get brought up, or maybe some authors might note that blues, rap, hip-hop and pro sports all seem to be dominated by black culture, but since we're all the same it doesn't matter.

Anyway, I can imagine Afro-American History to be basically the same timeline, but instead of starting in England they'd start in Africa and Jamaica and concentrate more on the black-skinned people that were doing things along the timeline. I mean, WWII was a huge deal, and the prez was white and the generals were white, but it's not like people who write history textbooks purposely try to leave out stories about black people. I mean, sure there were some super cool negroe jazz-cats making big splashes in the music world about the time of WWII, and probably some textbooks will mention Comp Bacey and Dizzy Gillespie and have pictures of them. But that's not the focus of a standard history book.

TLDR White American History and Black American History are both American History. The only difference is in how the course material is chosen and where you start your story: Europe or Africa.
User avatar #33 to #28 - mistafishy (11/03/2015) [-]
You missed the point.

I'm not talking about the content of the courses leaving out the history of these people, I'm saying that back in the day there was no voice or impact to be had by these people. Their history is different from other groups because their experience wasn't nearly the same.

I somehow got a degree in ethnic studies even though I'm a psychology major. I carry it around and say racist **** and when people yell "HEY STOP THAT YOU RACIST" I pull out my degree and bitches weep as they rip their cloth off and beg me to forgive them for calling me racist.

User avatar #31 - catkyte (11/03/2015) [-]
guess blacks don't even consider themselves americans anymore? whats the point of claiming heritage to a place you've never even been to, or your entire family for that matter, sure your great great great grandmother and grandfather were originally from africa or some other black producing country. but you have no ties to them beyond a common bloodline, it would be different if you spent your life growing up listening first hand to them about what they went through or their "mother lands" culture and customs, but you're a goddamn american through and through, and if you're a recently immigrated family then **** off because this situation doesn't apply to you.
#30 - IrishReaper (11/03/2015) [-]
**IrishReaper used "*roll picture*"**
**IrishReaper rolled image** Actually the proper term for that is Eurocentric perspective.
Why is our history taught through Eurocentric lenses you may ask? Ever heard of the famous term "History is written by the victors"? This is a prime example of how that quote applies.

Black. "African-american" people are called black. Unless they're born in Africa, and then moved to america to became a citizen. I'm not ripping into you OP. Just letting you know.

If you want to learn about your history go back to your **** country and learn it there as a main course with European history as an elective.
#10 - tacoperson (11/02/2015) [-]
to be fair most world history classes focus mainly on europe. No one even discusses the new world until europe discovers it.
