Well? Where is it?
User avatar #7 to #3 - nustix (06/18/2014) [-]
Why I am going to study that.
#9 to #7 - xfrankie (06/18/2014) [-]
Don't. Trust me. Yes, sometimes you get to do awesome stuff like setting fire to a green-burning shizzlewhizzle. But if you value your sanity and/or free time summer holidays? isn't that for kids? , stay clear of any of these nonsenses.

source: currently in second year in pharmaceutical college
also, the green-burning shizzlewhizzle was methylester of boric acid

Well I am not going to exactly study that but, I am doing molecular life sciences. Which is basicly cell biology, but it also has a huge amount of chemistry.
User avatar #21 to #10 - sortoathepenguin (06/18/2014) [-]
You guys are crazy going into those kinds of fields, to me at least. I barely passed chemistry, let alone all of this **** .

User avatar #35 to #21 - nustix (06/18/2014) [-]
The easiest way is not the most fun. If I were to go with easy I would study English, but that **** doesn't interest me. I want to mean something to this world by doing research and biology intrigues me and with biology comes chemistry which I don't mind and is also pretty interesting. I'd rather study astronomy but I'm not good at maths.
User avatar #63 to #35 - sortoathepenguin (06/18/2014) [-]
Yeah I understand what you're getting at, I myself am just one who has never been good at math and science. I am able to do it and get by, but i've never excelled, not like in classes like History and English. I myself strive to become a ESOL teacher in Japan , and that may be a bit on the easier side, but it's something I love and if I can help teach some of those kids, i'll be happy.

I wish you all the luck in the world for your schooling and career though, because that is some tough work you're going into.

>not good at math
>doing science

wut
User avatar #45 to #41 - nustix (06/18/2014) [-]
Ok, not great. Where I live you have 4 levels of math.
C= **** ****** what are you doing.
A= calculations involving chances and basic algebra
B= Algebra, geometry (the kind that makes no sense) a lot of differentiating
D= extra math for people who have nothing better to do

I did B and got a 5 so It's not like I'm real bad at math but it's one of my weakest classes. It was also not a case of not understanding but a case of the retards when it came to writing down **** .

Also I heard from different people that being good at math in highschool gives no guarantee for being able to do anything on univeristy level.
User avatar #55 to #45 - jacksipian (06/18/2014) [-]
well **** , that sucks because I'm really good at math.
User avatar #56 to #55 - nustix (06/18/2014) [-]
I said no guarantee. You might still be really good at it, but it's no reason not to pick a certain study.
User avatar #57 to #56 - jacksipian (06/18/2014) [-]
i don't even know what i want to go to college for.
User avatar #58 to #57 - nustix (06/18/2014) [-]
Well I already had to decide 2 months ago so I know now. It might not be the best study for me but when you have to choose out of a thousand studies this is as close as I get.
User avatar #59 to #58 - jacksipian (06/18/2014) [-]
cool, as long as it's something you like. that's all that matters, right?
User avatar #60 to #59 - nustix (06/18/2014) [-]
Yup, and it should give me a job. That's why I decided not to study archeology.
User avatar #61 to #60 - jacksipian (06/18/2014) [-]
archeologists have a job, they just don't have much money for most of the time.
User avatar #62 to #61 - nustix (06/18/2014) [-]
I guess, I also don't like traveling which seems to be a problem. The work however seems really interesting. I could always make it a hobby.

I just have to respond to this one. This is not what Theory means at all. Not even in the slightest.
User avatar #8 to #6 - meganinja (06/18/2014) [-]
It kind of is if you're saying something works in theory, meaning that something on paper works, being the opposite of working in practice, where it ACTUALLY works.
#15 to #8 - anon (06/18/2014) [-]
Look up what a scientific theory is.

i hope you guys are 12, if not, your countries school system is about as **** as it can get if they don't teach you basic scientific methodology/terminology.
#22 to #15 - mdk (06/18/2014) [-]
Are you responding to my post saying I don't know what a Theory is?

Well just in case "A theory is a hypothesis that has been met with vigorous testing and scrutiny and has held its own against the scientific method (deductive reasoning). When the hypothesis has not been disproven, discredited, or revised it is classified as a scientific theory ESPECIALLY when it has made significant contribution to scientific understanding of any given subject"

What I hate the most is the arguments I have on youtube with people when they ask things like "If evolution is true do you think it will be re-classified as scientific fact soon". No I dont asshole, it never will be a FACT. There is almost no such thing as scientific FACT. I went on to explain the theory of gravitation and was told this is why I will never understand God because I dont understand basic FACTS like gravity.

Check and Mate..... unless of course you were talking about somebody else post, in that case come have a drink of success with me brother
User avatar #16 to #15 - meganinja (06/18/2014) [-]
No, I'm not using it as a scientific theory. It's a different meaning of the word.
#23 to #16 - mdk (06/18/2014) [-]
There are no different meanings of the word. Nor should their be. Using theory as a word describing anything other than what it actually means is the reason people say things like "I have a Theory about this" instead of IDEA. When you use the word incorrectly it hurts the entire scientific community and our understanding of the Universe.

It makes it seem like any old asshole can just say something and call it a Theory.
User avatar #30 to #23 - meganinja (06/18/2014) [-]
the·o·ry
noun \ˈthē-ə-rē, ˈthir-ē\

: an idea or set of ideas that is intended to explain facts or events

: an idea that is suggested or presented as possibly true but that is not known or proven to be true

: the general principles or ideas that relate to a particular subject

The second definition is what we're using here. Just because you don't like the way something is used doesn't make it wrong.
#31 to #30 - mdk (06/18/2014) [-]
Those three definitions are nearly identical.....
User avatar #39 to #31 - meganinja (06/18/2014) [-]
That's the best argument you can come up with? It means that literally what you said it doesn't mean is actually in the definition of the word. You literally have no ability to dispute that. Just man up and admit you're wrong instead of trying to look like an ass.

no but it's true in that when your work something out on paper (in theory), it often won't work (perfectly) due to (small) error/assumptions/oversights/etc.

Maybe we should start differentiating between theories by naming one "scientific theory", as in a hypothesis proven over and over, and one "theory", as in hypothesis, idea or speculation. This way people should have an easier time understanding what a scientific theory is and when it's just a speculation.
Or we could just teach people this in school, but that would never work, right?
User avatar #46 to #42 - atrocitustheking (06/18/2014) [-]
Richard Dawkins posited calling a scientific theory a "theorum" (not theorem, because that's a math thing).
User avatar #50 to #46 - babyanalraper (06/18/2014) [-]
That's a bit more practical and looks better than just adding scientific before the word. I wish they would introduce that.
User avatar #51 to #50 - atrocitustheking (06/18/2014) [-]
Good luck getting anything like that passed in my state. People are nice but backward.
User avatar #53 to #51 - babyanalraper (06/18/2014) [-]
It shouldn't be a state thing, but a global thing by the scientific community and all the big newspapers. If everyone started writing theorum or any other substitute for that word as long as we pick ONE susbstitue... people would probably catch on. Then we wouldn't have people saying that x is just a theory and hasn't reeeeaaally been proven.
User avatar #54 to #53 - atrocitustheking (06/18/2014) [-]
Ah, good point, they all decided the definition of a planet after all (this same event disqualified Pluto).
Boils my blood when someone quotes "just a theory". Translation? I don't know what words mean.

#28 - kandcool (06/18/2014) [-]
A theory is a supposed explanation for something that happens but not all the facts are there. Thus the big bang theoroy We do not know what caused it therefor it cannot be considered a law and is not for sure true. I think it happened dont get me wrong but I'm saying thats not what a theory is.
User avatar #37 to #28 - babyanalraper (06/18/2014) [-]
A theory is a hypothesis that has been proven correct over and over
#38 to #37 - kandcool (06/18/2014) [-]
you forget the part where it can still be disproved. Like evolution. Evolution is a fact but and cannot be disproved but natural selection is a highly supported theory that could possibly be disproven
User avatar #40 to #38 - babyanalraper (06/18/2014) [-]
Every theory can be disproved. It's a fundamental part of science that you should never take something for granted. Being able to adapt to new data is what makes science so successful. If gravity suddenly stops working, well, then it's time to revisit our theories on gravity. If someone manages to measure the position and momentum at the same time, well then it's time to change our theories in quantum physics.
