when foreigners speak english, don't most people say "you speak english?"
also, when you read the translation, it sounds like he just memorized a few signs. it's a nice gesture, and she probably didn't notice, but I don't think he can actually understand sign language.

theres a difference between knowing sign language, and knowing enough to get you through basic conversation, or specific conversation in this santas case.

You only really need to know the alphabet to get through a conversation. I learned very slowly when I started dating one of my girlfriends who was deaf, by the end of our relationship I was pretty well fluent in ASL. The hardest part was realizing that they didn't use connecting words for the most part, that and realizing that turning the lights off didn't end an argument, just made it worse.
