Yes. Most strains of rice must be submerged to grow. Some strains of rice grow under about two feet (or more) of water. But, that's only like 6 inches to a foot of water in this video.
Some time after the rice has achieved certain growth levels, the paddy can be drained to increase yield and reduce the output of methane. It will be refilled though for the next round of planting.
yeah but it's not because the rice actually needs that much water. The main reason is to prevent the growth of weeds and other grasses as well as to keep insects away from the crop
