Moon colonies are ******* coming
User avatar #21 to #5 - Animefreake (07/29/2015) [-]
I do not think that will happen. We can do it, but there is literally no reason to make a moon colony.
#24 to #21 - Thescottman (07/29/2015) [-]
actually the main reason why we would make moon colonies is to reach other things in space, as it takes a lot of energy to get out of earths atmosphere, whereas it'll take considerably less energy to get out of the moons sphere of influence
#27 to #24 - micekill (07/29/2015) [-]
also mining away from the planet?
User avatar #63 to #27 - minorian (07/29/2015) [-]
and storing of nuclear waste... not to forget nazi moon bases
User avatar #108 to #24 - siemenz (07/29/2015) [-]
Why don't they just make a station that would serve as a dock then? You know a station for constructing ships. You could get ships, that would be otherwise impossible to lift through the atmo, into the space. This would mean more cargo could be carried, more fuel, more people, more tech etc. etc.
#78 to #24 - doublepzk (07/29/2015) [-]
I wanted to say that. But yeah, one of the hardest parts to getting into space is leaving the earth.
#75 to #24 - skebaba (07/29/2015) [-]
Then we could reverse-moonshot stuff we drop on moon from other planets back to Earth, so we let the momentum take the charge of getting the stuff to Earth. Of course before we can actually start colonizing planets, we need a Central Government. Otherwise it turns to **** .
#79 to #75 - doublepzk (07/29/2015) [-]
Or at least a UN that has power. Though I guess that would itself be a form of government. We need a government for our governments.
#98 to #79 - skebaba (07/29/2015) [-]
Or have only 1 government. We can't colonize until we learn to live equally between every inhabitant on Earth.
#117 to #98 - doublepzk (07/29/2015) [-]
A singular government is ideal. But we still have people slaughtering each other because of a difference in their gods. Unless something that would be quite literally revolutionary happens, I don't see that happening any time soon.
User avatar #67 to #24 - pawnman (07/29/2015) [-]
Also. It is a lot better to test our devices and experimental technologies locally rather than chuck it at mars and hope it works.

Really all we need is a dome and supplies. Also pressurization inside said dome. Hell we could even build it like a structure around the moon and add on a docking bay.

that's damn near impossible though. start telling people they can't have kids and you'll have angry ******* on your hands and everyone saying 'why don't we use our technology to live on the moon?'

See, the thing is, depopulation has to be gradual or the economy will **** up. We can't just halve the amount of people in the world over 1 generation, it'd need to be done over (pulling a number out of my ass based on vague reasoning) at least 5 or so generations.

cause money's the only thing that matters in that equation.....
People have not and do not go for population control in democratic nations. It's possible to incentiveize it, but that requires legislation and **** .

Or to put it simply, it's a lot ******* easier just to fly some bitches to the moon.

I think the worst part about a moon colony would probably be the fact there's nothing protecting you from anything hitting the moon.

Not until we bring up, like, trees and stuff and make an atmosphere.
I don't do science. That would probably take a lot of trees.
#48 to #32 - MasterDarkX (07/29/2015) [-]
Sorry to burst your bubble, but the moon is just too small to hold atmosphere.

For instance, Mars used to have a lot thicker atmosphere and liquid water. But it's low gravity caused most of the atmosphere to float away, and without it, the surface water boiled away. (figuratively speaking).

So in short, having water and tress and whatnot on the exposed moons surface just isn't possible due to the low gravitational pull of the moon. Sorry Chap.
User avatar #57 to #48 - kumimono (07/29/2015) [-]
That got me wondering, if it would be possible to introduce an "atmosphere" into the moon, but have it comprised of heavier gasses, CO2, hexafluoride, etc. Not making it brethable, but dense enough, that heat would stick around, you could walk around in what's essentially a scuba gear, and get protection from meteorites...
User avatar #76 to #57 - brisineo ONLINE (07/29/2015) [-]
Theoretically you could, and it may possibly last for a while, but for any atmosphere to stick, you need to have a magnetic field, otherwise the sun's solar wind blows it off. It's one of the reasons why Mars lost it's atmosphere but Venus still has one, and as far as we know, the moon doesn't have any large quantity of iron at it's core that could possibly create one. Earths' magnetic field is too weak at that distance to do much good either.

You also have the problem of maintaining plant life, since nitrates are practically non-existent. It's mostly metal or semi-metal oxides up there. (but it makes getting oxygen for colonies pretty easy on the positive side.)
User avatar #38 to #32 - thelastamerican (07/29/2015) [-]
Water. You don't play with photosynthesis to scrub the atmosphere in space, you take water, run an electric current through it, crack it into hydrogen and oxygen. Plants take up a lot more room than a nuclear reactor.

Its not warp drive. But so far no one has been able to disprove that the EM Drive is capable of producing thrust without using propellant, a feat that is impossible with our current understanding of physics.

If it ends up being true (which multiple tests in different vacuums and in different labs have shown so far) then the law of conservation of mass is wrong, or at least incomplete.

It might not be warp drive, but this drive would still be capable of getting to pluto in months.
#46 to #16 - youxbarstard (07/29/2015) [-]
But the thought of being able to reach most if not all of the planets within our solar system in months instead of years is something to be excited about.

Though one thing I've always thought about is what that sort of thing would do to things like the economy and any political standings, I very much doubt that it would bring us closer to world peace.

User avatar #90 to #34 - mountainyard (07/29/2015) [-]
Both the EM-drive and the Cannae-drive give thrust. They will NOT be sending us to the moon in four hours.
The thing about these engines is that they give about 90 micronewtons of energy from 17 watts of power. That's supposed to be physically impossible, and we can't figure it out.
User avatar #113 to #90 - thefates ONLINE (07/29/2015) [-]
To be fair, no one is sure how much thrust the EM-Drive can give because no one other than private companies are building prototypes. Thus, no information is being released.
#11 - anon (07/29/2015) [-]
Doesn't it produce like 5 nano newtons of thrust or something ridiculously small?
User avatar #114 to #11 - thefates ONLINE (07/29/2015) [-]
A different test on a larger scale here. Apparently it produced .1 newtons.

User avatar #115 to #11 - thefates ONLINE (07/29/2015) [-]
In case you miss it at the bottom.

"The thrust performance of this next generation tapered test article has been analytically determined to be in the 0.1 newton per kilowatt regime."
User avatar #61 to #11 - lean [OP](07/29/2015) [-]
Yeah, microNewtons actually. But the thing is any measure of thrust should be impossible. If this is not some elaborate hoax that Nasa and the Dresden researchers can't figure out, then Newton's laws are either incorrect or incomplete. 15 years of studying this thing and they can't figure out why it works. The tests performed are so small a scale because if it works on a large scale it would cause havok in the lab.
User avatar #80 to #61 - kittylactose ONLINE (07/29/2015) [-]
Our understanding of the universe in general is very small and limited so alot of stuff that might seem impossible could be possible. We could just be looking at physics from the wrong perspective thus why scientists can't understand why the EM drive works.

#84 to #70 - lean [OP](07/29/2015) [-]
Supposedly testing has resulted in predictable outcomes. Don't forget, Einstein modified Newton's gravitational laws to accompany his general relativity theory.
Black Science man believes that the majority of scientific theories are incomplete, and waiting for another piece of the puzzle to be solved. Observable physics that apply here and are held as scientific law may not be universal truths. We can only quantify observable outcome. Personally I hope that the theory behind this rocket is sound, and known science is just having a hard time observing it.

User avatar #88 to #84 - historybuff ONLINE (07/29/2015) [-]
While everything you said is true, the fact of the matter is that it is, as of yet, still unverified, and the forces we're talking about here are on the scale of micronewtons. To put that in perspective, to put something in space you need to average a force (dependent on the mass of the object) in kilonewtons
User avatar #91 to #88 - lean [OP](07/29/2015) [-]
I hear ya, it is two quotes from the article that I find most interesting:
"Our test campaign cannot confirm or refute the claims of the EM Drive but intends to independently assess possible side-effects in the measurements methods used so far," said Prof Tajmar.

"Nevertheless, we do observe thrust close to the actual predictions after eliminating many possible error sources that should warrant further investigation into the phenomena."

The second quote there hints at a phenomenal coincidence, the results are close to predictions. That would be pretty amazing if it was some unforeseen error. Also I don't think they are testing the full power, just input/ output ratios. You don't test something claiming to be thousands of times more powerful than traditional rocket engines in the lab.
User avatar #92 to #91 - historybuff ONLINE (07/29/2015) [-]
No but you do test it outside if you get my meaning. I mean, we're not exactly hesitant animals. When we first started seriously testing rockets we literally put them on a railroad line and strapped a guy to it to see if going that fast would hurt you.
